What are the consequences of no heat shield?
« on: 29 August 2007, 16:07:12 »

Adjusted my handbrake today. When taking off the centre heat shields, every nut sheared off :'(

I can self tap them back on,  as someone has done with the rear ones, but what are the consequences of leaving them off?

The manifold gets extremely hot. The convected heat will get taken care
of by the airflow through the engine bay. The problem is the radiated heat,
which the heatshield takes care of. Think of it as an electric radiator type of fire
that you sit too close to. To the side of it you have plenty of rubber hoses
for power steering and SAIS etc...
And right above it, between 4" and 6" when the bonnet is closed, is that felt
heat/sound proofing stuck to the underside of your bonnet. Don't know what the
fire proof quality is of that covering, but I guess it will be up to the job.
But I bet that prolonged exposure to that kind of heat won't do a lot for the
paint work on the outside of the bonnet. I would guess dulling and blooming
after a period of time.
