Wish I had known at the time.....but, 4 weeks ago, I had the cam cover gaskets replaced. Although mentioning that it was a common problem, my mechanic didn't mention the probable cause was crankcase pressure/blocked breathers (which I've gathered from the forum) and I can' be sure he checked.

The car continued to drip oil after the work (which, at first, I put down to residual stuff) but then started dripping at an alarming rate and I'm now told that the camshaft oil seals are shot.

Is this also a result of crankcase pressure or just an unlucky coincidence? 98000 mls. on the clock, by the way.

Also, I was charged five hours for the gaskets and have been quoted six hours for the seals and possibly more for unblocking the breathers. Is that the "manual" time?

Ive just done the oilcooler, camshaft oil seals and breathers and it took me about 5 hours and its the first time ive done it so I think your being over charged.

It is recommended that only genuine seals be used and the black sealant that Vauxhall supply. The breathers should also be cleaned or the seals will not last very long.

Rocker gaskets: 90511451, one set per bank (£25+ Vat retail)

O-rings: 90411826, 8 per bank (13p+ VAT retail)

Gasket, Inlet bridge to head: 90501652, 2 off  

Gasket, Inlet to Inlet bridge: 90501653, 3 off

Gasket, Inlet to Plenum O rings: 9118135, 6 off

Sealent, Black (not the Green stuff!): 90485251, 1 off

Do you mean the camshaft oil seals (ie-at the front of the camshafts) or the camcover seals?

I'm not a V6 expert, but I would have thought that the first leak would
show up through the Cam Covers and the second leak from the Timing
Belt cover?

Where are you seeing the leak from, not what the mechanic's telling you?
And is it from the same place as the first leak?

The mechanic might be as honest as the day is long, I don't know him,
but some folk will give you duff gen to cover their own faulty work or
shortcomings.

Take control and check it for yourself.

What usually happens is what you seem to suspect anyway. i.e. the camcover gaskets are replaced but the underlying problem i.e. blocked breathers is not resolved so the camcovers soon start leaking again through the new gaskets. The garage then tells you that is a different problem in order not to have the redo the job free-of-charge.

As said it is impossible to know if this is the case or perhaps the garage is right, you will need to investigate yourself and gather some evidence...

Hi there, I would of thought that if the cam shaft seals had failed then the leak will be behind the cam shaft pullys and fairly obvious to spot, so you need to take the cam belt cover off and inspect them. you may have to clean the area to be sure and then run the engine to see if the leak reappears.Please try to keep the belt fee of oil or grease as this is not good for the belt.
