power steering problem

brother in laws omega 2.5 v6 reflection,steering is heavey on tick over but when revved up goes light ,could anybody throw any ideas my way,somebody said it could be the alternator, but i seem to think it could be the power steering pump,because on full lock grinds like hell instead of smooth wearing noise

It could be the pump if its making god awful noises. Have you checked to make sure the aux drive belt is ok and that you have the correct amount of fluid in the pas resovoir???

new belt fitted with new tensioner, power steering level o.k. he has had the car about 3 years beeen like this from day one

Sorry then mate, it sounds as though the pump is shot. Please wait and see other peoples views before you start stripping down.

Deffo pump, not a common fault so second hand ones are a reasonable bet.
