Clicking noise
« on: 21 October 2007, 18:28:18 »

This has happened twice recently on my 2.2

Well it sounds like a relay going ballastic......really fast ticking noise of various speed.....it sounds like its coming from the central dash area........but both times by the time i pulled up to have a good listen its stopped. Its quite loud......both times passengers in the back have heard it.

I did wonder about the hazard lights relay......but i dont get any lights or any visually to give a clue.....and then the hazard relay isnt behind the central dash bit or any relays are there??.....but when im driving my perception of where the noise is coming from could be misleading as my hearing isnt equally split.

The reason i thought about the hazard light relay is the indcator stalk is acting up a bit.....it doesnt cancel all the time (worn) and sometimes when moving the stalk you can hear it arcing. I think ive read before dodgy indicator stalk can cause hazard light probs.

But would i expect to see the indicators lights flashing on the dash??? if it was the indicator relay.

Anyone any ideas what this intermittant ticking noise could be??

Where the noise is coming from may be misleading, have you checked the tyres to see if anything is in the treads?

Its definately inside the car......i can be doing a constant speed and the clicking noise can be a slow click one sec and then going nuts the next. When its done it......the clicking probably lasts a few mins then stops. I'd say its about the same loudness the noise the indicators make......which made me think it was a relay going nuts.

I had a strange one once which turned out to be something lose and resonating inside the thing you plug the seatbelt into.

Also, I used to have a bad habit of holding the indicator stalk just far enough to make contact rather than push it all the way such that it latched (if that makes sense).  Eventually the switch wore such that you could hear the switch arcing internally - nothing like that is it?

Try turning off the aircon / press eco, might narrow the problem down.

My indicator switch does arc now and then.......its about that loudness......but it is a definate clicking noise that i can hear......you could almost confuse it with an arcing noise when its clicking mad style......but when it slows down its definately a click and not an arcing noise

Ive turned the climate off totally and the clicking didnt stop......so i assume the sampling fan, matchlesses idea, also stops when you do this  :-/
