Rubbing out.........
« on: 25 October 2007, 20:13:32 »

Whilst turning, either left or right, I'm noticing that the front wheels are rubbing on the liners in the arches. This used to happen occasionally when I first got the car, especially when braking hard and winding it into a roundabout. It has got noticeably worse recently, even a gentle 15mph right hander into my road causes this to happen.

The ride feels a bit spongy at times I must admit, but I normally put that down to the terrible conditions of those things we have to drive our cars on in Norfolk.......roads to everyone else....lol  ;)

The car has now done just over 105,000 and judging by the service book and reciepts I'm guessing the shocks and springs are the originals from new, as there is no evidence of replacements being fitted.

If I was to consider new shocks and springs (standard) on all four corners, what would the cost be and where would be the best place to buy them.

Any help would be great.... :y

is it on the standard alloys with standard tyres?

if so, could be worn shocks since no evidence of replacement, someone should be along with advice on prices, not sure if a trade card may help...?

Even so, even with totally sh**ged shockers, is it normal for the wheels to rub on the wheel arch liners?  :-/

Where is it rubbing? Front mudflaps are the usual culprits.
If it really is rubbing on the liners then when were the front wishbones or their bushes last changed? Could be that the front bushes are shot.
Other possible cause is if the car has been nudged into a wall etc, the upper mounting brackets (topmost screw in the wheel arch) are designed to snap off in a minor bump, this can allow the bumper to droop a bit, the wheelarch liner is screwed to the bumper so might be being pulled out of shape?
Bit of detective work needed I think.

Wheels and tyres correct??? Standard 16" elite wheels are 225/55/16 tyres.

Thanks for the help guys... :)

The wheels and tyres are correct. It is rubbing on the forward part of the liner as the scuffmarks are evident. If you look at the arches side on, then it's roughly an area about 20 degrees up from the front to about 45 degrees. Both sides are the same. The car does seem to sit a bit low at the front but it's even both sides. It measures, from the top of the tyre at the wheel centre to the lower lip on the arch, approximately 31mm. I'm guessing the shocks and springs are tired and have sagged a bit. The bushes may be shot too and I will check these asap. I remember fitting a set of poly bushes to a 4x4 sierra once, bit of a ball ache but not impossible.

Ah, that's a point. Thanks for that mate. It could be that the liners have dropped or the shocks are shot or a combination of both. Will get out there this afternoon and have a proper look.... :y
