Steering box play
« on: 08 November 2007, 15:15:10 »

Hi Guys
Just had my annual MOT at a Vauxhall dealer and all is well apart form 2 advisories. 1, exhaust pipe rubbers perishing, well thats no problem. And 2, slight play in the actual steering box ? Now I openly admit I no very little about steering boxes, has anyone here had a similar problem ? is it adjustable or a straight case of replacement.

Thanks in advance.

Mike

P S are the steering boxes the same for all models.

There is an adjutment on top of the steering box, wind it clockwise half a turn (no more) and see what improvement you get

Slacken the lock nut and wind the screw in untill it stops, then wind the screw back slightly, no more than 1/16 of a turn, tighten locknut. You should feel the screw compressing a spring just before it goes tight, it's important to maintain pre-load on the spring without going solid.
