Hi all, just a simple question about the oil filter on a 2.6 2002.
What sort of spanner do you need to remove it, all i can see is a square socket on the end of the can that holds the element. Is that it or are there others bolts to undo. it looks like a 3/8 or 1/2 inch drive would fit.

3/8th should slot straight into the square, it didn't on mine so had to use a socket over the hex.

24 ring or socket spanner. Using a 3/8" drive is a no no! If the filter housing is on too tight (most garages ignore the '10NM' warning stamped on it) the soft alloy will simply crack. Happened to more that one member here... luckily I learnt of other people's experience and bought the right tool

Thanks VXL v6 didnt want to stick something in there if its not supposed to ,Car is well overdo for an oil change 9K since its last one. Normally do them every 5K. first one on this car, the last mig i had just had the screwoff chuck away type.

..and that's why you shouldn't be using a 3/8" drive straight on the cap...

Thanks (I am not MarkJay) i have a 24 1/2 inch socket .Dont want to break it (saw the picture you sent) Think i'll use the correct socket.

If it has been overtightened then counterhold the body with a strap wrench (not a chain one), apply thrutch to your spanner / socket then clout the end of the spanner etc with a hammer. The shock should unstick the cap without loosening the body or cracking anything.
You need to be athletic or borrow a second pair of hands.

At least your's is only a 24, my DTi has a 36 & i had to buy one special  , but my tops made from plastic so  
(before someone says that the same can happen, i know)
Seems no matter what they'd make them from, they'd get maggled

Its quite common for the plastic 'nut' bit to shear off on (later) 2.5TD
