just got car back from vaux [only local co that could read codes] and i have a mechanical prob with gearbox ,like a slug when setting off and when warm no real acceleration can't get much more than 70 on m way ,can i use any auto box or does it need to be a diesel one ?
any input will be much appre,

2.5TD's autos are fitted with the AR25 (same as 2.5 V6 petrol)

and they don't last much beyond 130k miles. The 2.5 BMW TD is de-tuned for the Omega, but it still nakeres the box.

You need to fit an AR35 box (same as 3.0 & 3.2 petrol)

On the up side, if you fit an AR35 you can chip it!  

Ohh and just a heads up, change the oil in the engine on your 2.5TD every 3k max!

So, what was the actual fault code? Is the verdict from Vx just a cover-all diagnosis, someone (MarkDTM?) might be able to interpret their fault codes to something cheaper/easier than a 'new' gearbox.

Is the real problem the gearbox? If it won't exceed 70 is this because it runs out of revs due to incorrect gear selection or gearbox slipping or because the engine is down on power?

Does the gearbox change through all 4 ratios or does it pull away and remain in 3rd? Does manual gear selection with the stick help?

First port of call is always to check and top up gearbox fluid. Suck out some of the existing fluid and see if it's brown and smells burnt or still clear and a red colour. I'd say look for obvious engine problems too, such as split intercooler ducting, rattly timing chains, etc.

150k on a TD.  The gearbox will be shafted. Get a AR35 (reuse torque converter and bellhousing from yours), and a chip.

Gearbox should be around £100 for a known good one, chip price varies depending on ECU, but I'd guess £40 - £80.

And as tunnie says, don't let the engine oil go much beyond 3k on this lump.
