Some random TD questions for you!
« on: 03 March 2008, 12:52:49 »

Right, as I am soon to be in the market for a derv elite wagon B, I have a few questions, mainly about tuning.

Firstly, I have heard with a rangie tubby, IC and some chippage it can make a good amount of power and torque. Can any one shed any further light?

Secondly, is the auto box any good and whats the power/torque max rating on these?

Thirdly, anything else I need to look for on these as I am looking for a decentish example with around 1500 to spend with room to do a few choice mods to make it 'mine'  8-) :y

Many thanks

The engine was derated in the Omega precisely to stop it eating the AR25 gearbox so the first step before tuning is to upgrade to an AR35 or to get a manual in the first place.

Ah, I assumed it was the torque convertor that was the weak point. Cool, next newbie question is what is the AR35 out of and is it happy on the AR25 GCU?

The AR35 is the auto. gearbox fitted to the 3.0 and 3.2 V6 Omegas. Others have more knowledge than I, but I believe it is straightforward to fit it to a 2.5 TD, using the original bellhousing and torque converter from the TD.

I believe the boxes are electrically the same, so the ECU remains happy. It needs to be the ECU from the TD, as the shift points are engine specific).

Ah good... I think I may have an AR35 then off my V6 somewhere, unfortunatly pikies stole most of that project but the box may well still remain  :y

So once thats sone, rangie tubby and IC or just ecu up the standard bits? Must admit, one reason I was after the auto was reliabilty with the grunt, I suppose if a manual turned up they are pretty strong?

(sorry about the noobie q's!)

I believe a good boost in performance can be had just by changing the chip in the Omega because the engine was deliberately detuned to the limits of the AR25 but the turbo, etc. were not changed and are thus capable of more power.

2 options - BMW 2.5TD engine, or Vauxhall 2.2DTi engine.  I guessing your price range, the BMW engine will be what you are after.

It WILL need an AR35 autobox fitted (straight swap, keep TD's bellhousing and TC) if you are going to chip. Or get a manual.  Although the manual box is only rated to 280Nm, it seems more than capable of taking the chips.

My TD Elite has the AR35 fitted and a chip to bring it back to BMW power.  It will never win any races (unless I put it up against Tunnie's 2.2 petrol :P), but isn't exactly sluggish, and does return reasonable mpg.

Yeah, Omega B so 2.5. I will keep an eye out for the AR35 box as I cant take too long to change, as I said, I may well have one in my collection of bits! I still have no idea of what power is as stock on any of the various cars, will go and do some net searching now  :)

Just to clarify, there never was (and likely never will be) an Omega-C.

Ah! I see, so omega A was the senny (miss mine alot!) and B was obviously omega as we know it, I thought the C was the last of them but thats just a facelift (if you can call it that  ;D ) and that would explain the mini facelift referrals Ive seen. Always learning! All car manufacturers do that random naming (random imo anyway), like the nissan in my sig pic is an S13, then you had the S13 facelift, but the next model got S14 then S14a for the facelift. Its all daft I tell the!!!

Oh and while Im noobing about with my silly questions, did the elite ever come without leather as per http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280205376808&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123 ?

Thanks!  :y

Omega A was our Carlton. A vauxhall guy told me that now were part of EU, all the VX cars are now female (ie most european girls names end in 'A', so Nova, Corsa, vectra etc), So not sure about the Vans then as they end in 'O'?, never did think Vx people know what they where talking about.

As for the Elite Leather, not sure, think they were a cost option, but what was even rearer is you had a no cost option (on the cost option for leather) to fit the MV6 Leather Recaro Sports front seats with some buttons missing.
