temperature sensor
« on: 10 March 2008, 18:49:55 »

Good evening,

I purchased a 1998 Omega last Monday and the car itself looks good and drives good but the temperature meter on the dashboard isn't working.  I am looking for the temperature sensor on my engine which should be somewhere on the back of the engine but can not locate it.
The engine is a X20XEV . Am i looking in the correct place or is it somewhere else on my engine?
I have purchased a workshop manual via ebay which should come in later this week but just in case that it doesn't arrive before the weekend could anybody tell me where this sensor is?
I like to see if this sensor is connected and if connected replace it. before i start replacing the thermostat and / or the meter in the dashboard.

The temperature sensor is at the rear of the cylinder haedand is really difficult to reach.

You can see it if you use a mirror and torch, in fact there are 2 sensors and the one for the temperature gauge on the dashboard has only a single wire attached.

Best of luck if you have to replace it, unless some else here has actually managed to change one and can say how to do it.

Thanks
i think i better take some pictures of the back of the engine then an watch it on the computer to see where it is. If i can identify it then i should able to see if  it is connected and if it is connected to replace it.  If the picture comes out ok then I will post it here.

It's not that hard to find once you know what you're looking for.  I was looking for a connection that you would normally associate with a spade connector but it is not what you would expect.  The connection is circular - so have a feel roundabout the dispack for a disc then you should be able to locate it.  I've included a picture which should help you.  You won't be able to see it because it's located at the back of the cylinder head (the picture was taken with the engine out) but it should give you an idea of where it is in respect to the HT leads, breather etc.

Just to add there is probably nothing wrong with the sensor itself.  It's more likely that the spade that connects to it is loose or the wire needs a solder.

I had a check behind the engine and it was indeed a loose wire. i had to stiffen the connecter a bit and refittd it and did a test drive and temp stays nicely at 90 degrees. The car is now parked and will have a check later on to see if any coolant is away but haven't seen any water underneath the car.

Next project will be the brakes all round and i am going to change the disc for new ones. it is a bit wobling under breaking which i can feel in de brake pedal and on the steering wheel.

Are there any good online shops where you can get them from?
I've already checked at Halfords and they are between 60 and 80 pounds depending on which I need for this car.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Rickyboy can I use the picture on another forum ?

Great to hear you fixed it and don't worry about using the photo in other forums.   :y

As for the brakes I usually go to the nearest motor factors for things like brakes.  I think the brakes are particularly expensive for this car but you should be able to get a bit cheaper than Halfords in a motor factors.  I was thinking about buying off ebay but dreaded the thought of getting the wrong brakes or waiting a week for delivery.

thanks.

Found a shop in Edinburgh for parts and have send them an email.
Still got 3 weeks left before we really need the car.
I had a quick look at the front discs and looks like a caliper job as the outside has rust on it. The locks on the wheel nut covers are very difficult to take off. I got three off and hopefully get the oher one off also but I just soaked it in WD40. The T bar tool to get the lock nut out is not very usefull to put some force on unfortunately

I doubt the calipers need replacing, mabye just a gentle rub with a wire brush will reveal they aren't that rusty.  The bolts have loctite on them which is why they're proving so difficult to get off.  If you are really struggling with the last one try using an impact driver if you can get a hold of one.

Had the front brakes off today and found that the springs on top of the inner pads where missing. the thin plates behind the pads where all folded up. the discs are ok and only a half mm thinner then the orignal thickness and don't seem to be warped. The rubbers of the wishbones seem to be ok and can not find any play in the steering rods. I replaced the front pads and done a test drive and it seems to have stopped vibrating under braking and no vibrating whilst driving either. Also could see straight away that the discs where used over this short test drive so seem to do the job ok. Tomorrow will have a better test ride, wheater permitting as it is snowing at the moment, for about a 50 or 100 Miles and see how it is going. If everything is ok then the car is fine too and ready to use.
