Genuine Vx gaskets and BLACK sealant everytime, or you'll be doing the job again in 6 months ...  :(

Clean the breathers at the same time

Water loss, could be anything.... HBV are favourite right now. Whatever it is, make sure your top-up fluid is 50:50 with antifreeze. These engines MUST have antifreeze in as a corosion inhibitor....  or you just get even more problems !!

Have a look in maintenance guides, there are "how to's" for all these jobs.

Allow a full day for both gaskets and the breathers, and be carefull with the passenger side gasket, the cable tray makes life difficult and its easy to just snag the gasket on fitting ... leaks like a sieve then... :(

While you're that far in, for the cost of a thermostat assembly, I would change it.
Does your engine come up to temperature quickly and then remain reasonably constant? If not, definitely change it.

When you do the camcovers, its worth removing the manifold below the fuel rail (easy - just millions of bolts) - then you can see the thermostat, oil cooler plate and bridge pipe at the back - any of which could be the cause of your leak.    I agree its almost worth changing the HBV for a new (Vx) one while you are at it if its not been done already.

I have never seen these mythical warped cam covers.  I expect its a fantasy made up by mechanics (and shit gasket makers) who dont know how to fit them.
