Wiper motor
« on: 17 April 2008, 20:12:47 »

I'm not sue why but tonight my wiper blades stopped mid sweep, stuttered, and stopped again half way up my windscreen.

I switched them off and left them for a while and now they work fine  :-?

Well almost - now they are left at the 11o'clock position when at rest.  How do I get them to seat normally?

Is it a force jobby or take of the arms and reseat them? and if so - how?

Sounds like the relay is playing up, you dont want to remove and refit as when they do work again they will try and come off the screen :o

Either relay, or parking contacts in the motor itself. Unless the arms are slipping on the splines, but not both?

Have you forgot to unstick em from the icy screen in a morning Mark?
I did the other morning and one stopped working, took it off and it had been spinning on the wiper shaft. Simply reseated and tightened up and its been fine since.

Do they always stop in the same position?
Will the wipers both move together if you try to move them by hand? On the actual motor under the plastic scuttle there is a plate fastened to the motor spindle via a splined shaft - this transfers the rotary action to back & forward of the mechanism. The nut that holds this plate can come loose, allowing the motor to carry on turning, but without the wipers moving.
If the parked position varies then it's likely to be the parking switch contacts within the motor (under the riveted on cover)

The parked position doesn't change - they always stop in the same spot.

They've never stuck to the windscreen but 2/3 weeks ago the pile up of snow stopped them sitting flat and may be a contibuting factor.

What do you suggest I tackle first?

Remove the whole mechanism, wipers off the spindes, remove plastic scuttle & then there are 3 or 4 screws that hold the mechanism in place. It's been a while now since I've had this job to do, but it's obvious when you get there. slacken off the nut on the motor spindle & tyhere are 2 'V' that you've to line up with each other >< to align everything up. Re-assemblely is the reversal etc etc ;D

Give that man a fish  :)

When trying to disassemble it today I noticed the above and set about slackening off the top nut, marking and adjusting the position of the blades and retightening it - now 100 aok. :y

Me nuts were loose afterall  :-[
