Ever since coming onto this site I have heard about 'tech2'.

I assume it is software, but how do you use it, where do you acquire it, and how much please? :-?

It seems to be far more advanced than the 'paperclip test'!

a real tech2 costs thousands, The boy has 2, one is looked after by Marks DTM

They are a handheld vauxhall computer that can talk to any on board system on the car to check for errors, perform updates, activate most devices, test systems, get live data, program new keys, and more.

There is also the cheapo tech2, which runs with a laptop costing about £30, which is basically a glorified paperclip, except it sometime talks to more than just the engine and can reset codes, airbag lights etc.  well worth the money if you can use it properly.

"Real" Tech2 - Vx diagnostic kit .. cost £1500 second hand if lucky .. about £4000 new I believe .. .  Will read/program all GM cars including gearbox/AirCon/engine etc etc as well as programming immobilisor keys.

"Cheapo" Tech 2 - varies from £30 to £600 and you get what you pay for .. an interface that goes between the car and a laptop ... can read but not program and usually engine only - software may be in an "unusual" language ..... especially the cheap ones - will only do certain cars

ELM327 - £20-£40 -another cheap reader for the later cars .. can read/reset but not program

"Paperclip" - about 2p - will read codes on some cars - not all - instructions here :

Just bought one of the cheapos from ebay

This is the serial port model, they do one with a USB interface but a few people have said they are rather temperamental and the serial type work better provided you have a real serial port on your laptop.
As said the software is rather buggy and in parts hasn't been fully translated from original Hungarian.
