2.5 TD Auto Box question.
« on: 05 May 2008, 22:14:31 »

Hi there,

I've borrowed my mates Omega 2.5 TD Auto Elite (1996) 160,000 miles to service it.

Car drives fine - no warnings - no lights on the dash.

One small thing though - the torque converter doesn't seem to stay locked when I would have expected it to - above 55-60 MPH and in 3rd or 4th.

It's fine when cold - but when the engine/box warms up, it unlocks, resulting in poor economy and feel. If I feed in some power, it locks back up, and then unlocks as soon as you lift off. Seems to only happen in top gear - locks up fine in third.

I've drained out some ATF - by undoing the level plug with the engine off, and then started the car, and refilled it with fresh (What a palava!). Seems a bit better - shifts are a tad smoother - but they were very good to start with...But it still unlocks when you lift out of the power when doing 60 plus in top.

No faults reported - only oddity is that the engine coolant gauge doesn't read very much - always looks like a cool engine - but the engine is warming up nicely.

ATF was clear (and seemed thin) a bit dark, but doesn't smell burned - so I don't think the Trans is trashed - it shifts very nicely - it's just this torque converter lockup issue.

Any Ideas?

Next step would be to drop the Trans sump, and clean it out - and try new fluid - but any other observations would be welcome.

Ta,

Mike.

Don't know much about the auto box, infact zero.
Can say my TD which is a manual the temp gauge sometimes hardly moves, seems better just lately gets to 80 and over only when towing.
Seems to get up to normal operating temp though, and runs fine, been like that for last 2 years.

My last td did exactly that. When cold would lock up & stay locked as long as i kept accelerating, but ease up at 120k and it unlocked.
Made no diff to economy always 30-34. This is from 3 td autoest's

Full fluid change may help.

Change stat. Really easy once you've got that stupid, pointless viscous off...
