Shattered rear screen.
« on: 27 May 2008, 01:11:41 »

Went to the car this evening to find my rear screen totally shattered :o.

Fair play, the Police were on scene within 10 mins of calling. Apparently some 18yr old had been firing a catapult over the houses and hit my rear screen. They're looking into the incident.

Phoned Autoglass to register the broken screen and I'll arrange for them to fix it tomorrow.

Does anyone know how long it'll take and whether they have an industrial hoover jobbie to clean out the shattered glass ?

If they just replace the glass then I'd rather get everything hoovered before the new screen is in place and that'll take a while with a domestic hoover.

Yep, you're right there. I had an Astra GTE for 5 years. That must have had a new screen. I would find bits of glass almost every time I'd give the interior a hoovering.
About how long will it take ?

Bonded screens need time for the glue to go off before you can use them again. Not worh using it again until the fitter advises or warranty may be void. In my experience, last time I had one donw was about 4 hours. I just left the car with them. Least they are coming to you  :y

Change of plan. They can book me in for 12 o'clock on wednesday, so I'll drop it of at 8ish and pick it up after work at 6 o'clock. That should give it plenty of time.
A call out fix-it can't be done until thursday :-?

Thanks for the info folks.

They will hoover it out.  But if I were you I would pull the rear seat out when they are done and give it a few good hooverings with the odd beating in between.

The carpets are one thing and bad enough should anyone slip thier shoes off whilst in the car but a splinter in the a*se is annother thing.

If you have a hoover with a rotary turbo tool on it then give it a bash.

Then when you are done, get some sticky tape and wrap it round your hand with the sticky on the outside and give the seats a rub over.

After all that you should have got all the glass out, if you have any doubts chuck a blanket over the seats that are being sat on for a couple of days, you might as well let the glass stick in something else other than yourself if you are uncertain all the glass has been removed.

Ex car valeter tips from experience gained.

Did a few valets on cars with shattered glass, as you say, gets every where.

Had it have been a side windows I would have suggested taking the door trim off and sticking the hoover in, the glass in those cases bugs people for ages.

Now you know why I dont really take pics of my cars for the gallery, especiallt the inside.

I've not cleaned mine for ages. Inside or out.  I tend to get the grumps with it when there's something not right, at the moment it's a "saggy rear end". They're gonna think I'm a right slob with the state of it at the moment, and that's just the front undamaged half. If I don't wash it soon I reckon I'll be able to plant potatoes on it.
I've got KYB gas jobbies coming in the next few days. Need to find springs but can't find uprated but std ride height jobbies. I'm not lowering this one. My Elite is 40mm lowered with 17" rims. That handles well for a big old barge,  but I'm not gonna bother phaffing with the ride height of the CD.
I'd like to find out what plod used on theirs but no one seems to know.
