I’m changing the cam cover gaskets and cleaning the breathers tomorrow (weather permitting!).  I’ve read the How-To guides, but some questions for those in the know please re. the cam cover gasket replacement:

1)  Applying the sealant – does that go only under the gasket (i.e. between the head and the gasket), or also between the gasket and the cover?

2)  Is keeping the new gaskets in place whilst the cover is being manouvered into position likely to be an issue?

3)  Is there a sequence/order for tightening the cam cover bolts?

1)  Applying the sealant – does that go only under the gasket (i.e. between the head and the gasket), or also between the gasket and the cover?
Sealant is applied to the head and camshaft front bearing cap. It is only needed at the sharp corners, so either side of the 'D's and in the transition between head and bearing cap.
2)  Is keeping the new gaskets in place whilst the cover is being manouvered into position likely to be an issue?
Only on the N/S head but easier if you have removed the cable tray from the wiring loom.
3)  Is there a sequence/order for tightening the cam cover bolts?
Use good practice...start in the middle and work towards the ends, nip all bolts gently then torque up properly

--> Only on the head (alloy) bit, not on the camcover (plastic).

2)  Is keeping the new gaskets in place whilst the cover is being manouvered into position likely to be an issue?

--> Not really, though you do need to make sure it is in the groove... i.e. you stick it in the camcover and then gently lower the camcover with the gasket into place (the gasket wont fall out). Before tightening, have a look all around (and feel with your finger at the back to make sure no part of the gasket is bulging out, though this is unlikely to happen.

3)  Is there a sequence/order for tightening the cam cover bolts?

--> None specified, but it is sensible to cross tighten them as you would do with a cylinder head. What I did was finger-tighten them first, then using the Torque Wrench gradually cross-tightened them to the specified 8NM.

Couldn't see a groove in the mating surface on the head from the HowTo pics - so is it on the underside of the cover...implying you mate the gasket to the cover first and then mate both to the head?

Indeed so.


There is no issue with sealing between the rubber gasket and the camcover, it is only the bendy bits (as shown in the how-to) between the rubber gasket and the alloy head that need the sealant.
