X20XEV Bottom End
« on: 14 June 2008, 17:04:55 »

My nieghbour needs some help with his 98 2.0 16v

His head gasket went about a mounth ago. he replaced that and now there is what sounds like a bottom end rumble.

Local rebuilders what an arm and a leg to grind crank and new shell, and seeing he is on a very limited budget at the moment, is in a catch 22 situation.

Omegas are ver few and far between in wolves breakers so he's having problems locating a replacement lump at a reasonable price.
To the point now he has asked me to put it on egay for him even tho it's not really what he want's to do.

has anyone got a sound bottom end for the above so i can help him get it sorted. top end is now 100% so if anyone can help please let me know on here or by pm and I can pass the msg on.

Thanks in advance guys/girls

ps Fred the owner say's thanks too

Don't forget you could also use a Vectra lump - just swap over the bits which are different (sump, mountings).

I got a complete engine off ebay for mine for £80 - but cost me a 400 mile round trip, alas.  It's not a perfect engine (bit tappety, and not sure the bottom end is totally A1), but its better than the one I had in it.

There were a few engines on ebay for about £150 at the time, but Vectra ones.  I just struck lucky, I think as it was an actual Miggy Auto one (which the Corsa boys don't want). Perhaps it being in Brighton didn't help, though..

Ebay is a gamble, though - depends how bad the existing one is.  Unless its setting car alarms off (I had a Triumph Dolomite which knocked that badly) or blowing clouds out of the filler cap when running, just be gentle and give it clean oil at all times - it'll probably last a good while yet.

2.0 16v engine here in good working order if you want it from manual Omega...£200 removed with all ancilliaries except starter motor and alternator...

Totally agreed far easier and quicker to put in replacement engine than to do major fixes on current one...

You should be able to find an engine out a vectra without a problem.  All you will need to do is swap the sumps around and the dipstick.  You should be able to find one for less than £200.  I paid £80 for an engine with high mileage which runs like a dream.

A new engine is definitely a better option.  I was going to go down the same route in fixing the bottom end but you will not get the parts cheap.  You will probably find you will spend a lot more than getting the replacement engine and you'll need to expend a lot of effort.

I could do it for £150 if your collecting it...not really worth doing it for less tbh as its weighing in value is about £50 atm and its a few hours to remove...
