V6 Engine knocking noise
« on: 27 June 2008, 19:51:02 »

Further to my post about engine removal (last updated 21 June 20:28) I have stripped the engine but failed to find the cause of the knocking noise which was the main reason for removing it in the first place. (I also needed to replace an aircon hose from the compressor and clean off 11 years of muck) The noise could be heard at tickover. It was quite loud and sounded like either a faulty tappet or a small end. It was probably there at higher revs too but couldn't be heard over the general wind noise etc.

So far I've found that no.2 piston and valves have a lot of carbon deposited on them. However, the piston rings appear OK, as do the valves. Could one of the hydraulic tappets be faulty? How does one test them?

I have been getting an "Oil Lack" warning message quite a lot. I haven't yet examined the oil pump but have been told that warning message could be an ECU fault, i.e. a false alarm.

Any other suggestions would be most welcome as I don't want to rebuild and reinstall the engine only to find the noise is still there!

Check the oil pick up strainer isn't blocked or full of crap.  Was the knocking coming from the top or bottom of the engine?

my 3.2 had a knock from cold start up on the left bank of the engine top end only did it a couple of times. Posted on here about flushing as the car had not been serviced for over a year before i bought it and i suspected a lazy hydraulic lifter due to badly needing an oil change. I was told not to flush as this can cause large deposits(i called it Marmite) to break free and these can block the oil pick up pipe. Did not see your original post and im no expert but i cant help but wonder from your description that some regular oil changes (as i was advised by Mark in my case) would be the way to go. But must have been more to it than a lazy lifter to warrant dropping the motor?
I'm afraid thats the limit of my experience so i would NOT take to much notice of this post. Just hope it help you somehow.

Thanks for the replies so far. The oil pickup pipe and strainer were OK but, as mentioned, I haven't yet examined the pump itself. However, all the bearing shells look fine, i.e. no sign of lack of oil. The noise was there all the time and did sound like a tappet so I did consider just removing the cam covers etc. but seeing how awkward access is with the engine in place - and, as mentioned, because I wanted to clean it all of 11 years of muck - I decided to remove the whole lot. I don't regret it, even if my garage floor is knee-deep in all the stuff I've had to remove before reaching the actual guts of the engine!

If it's a tappety noise then oil changes are the best option.  First thing is to get a hold of some forte's top end treatment and some forte's engine flush.  Give it several oil changes as Chris says and hopefully all will be well.
