another from me
« on: 06 July 2008, 12:06:15 »

drove a short distance to the girlfriends house yesterday and heard what originally souded like en exhaust just lightly scraping the road, but on inspection, i could see nothing at all hanging down and could see nothing touching the wheels or brakes that could make that sound, nor anything that looked out of place under the car

anyone experienced similar?

the middle and the back exhaust sections are only 2 months old, back didnt need replacing

was it a bumpy rd. ? Or speed bumps, as in my case. My work has several speed bumps outside on the main rd. and on cold days when the cars cold over the bumps i hear what sounds like something dragging, probably not loud enough to be exhaust, mud flaps maybe, i have none fitted. I put it down to cold oil in the shocks as it does not do it on the way to work when the car has been driven for 25 mins at 5am in winter when its even colder.

Seems to be on the down stroke as the wheel drops down the far side of the bump,(rebound stroke)
Or maybe your hand brake shoes lining have fallen into the bottom of the drum? Worth a check they can try to lock, maybe?

Like Chris has stated I have found that you can "ground" when negotiating certian roads, and anything low enough to touch the road surface, mud flaps, exhaust, even floor cross members monentarily, can make a similar noise.

Once had a disc brake heat deflector shield slightly bent and making contact with a wheel, that produced such a noise, along with various engine compartment under-sealing panels coming loose, getting caught by the air stream and touching the road surface, which gives an awful sound as though something really serious has dropped from the underside! :o :o

was on a relatively normal road surface when i first heard it, only heard it occasionally coming home, and very lightly, but heard it on my own street, which is freshly resurfaced and very smooth

the heat defflector shield rattles when the hand brake lineing falls off the shoes, but its a metalic tiny sound, and usually accompanied by the nand brake trying to stop the car, if youve ever knocked it with a spanner while changing the pads youll know the sound abit like towing tin cans behind the car, just got married style.
Is your girlfriend trying to tell you something, perhaps??? ;D ;D ;D

Struggling now.

???

no sound from inside the car, all windows open including sunroof to pinpoint sound direction, sounded like rear offside wheel, took the car down to a quiet road on the industrial estate, put handbrake on one click less than fully so it'll move slightly when on, carefully nudged a couple of feed forward and a couple of feet backward, had a good thrash up and down and pumped the foot brake a few times while also swerving about when safe to do so, rattle has gone (for now)

did all this on petrol since it runs fantastic that way, then i also switched over to gas to listen to how awful it still is. will be asking for a refund pending talks with citizens advice in the week

by the way, all help is greatly appreciated from all of you, especially since lately i've flooded this place wanting help, i always feel really guilty for asking for help because the majority of the time i cant return the favour

Something similar happened to me a couple of times when our road was resurfaced. I put it down to stones getting stuck between the disc back plate and disc. By the time I got round to looking they had ground away to nothing. Never had the problem since. My theory... unless whatever made the noise was a "surplus" part which has since dropped off my car!

i suspect its that then, since its gone now, just had a new drive aswell and the not very good quality cement used to blend between the drive and the street has crumbled slightly
