Hi Guys,

I need to fix my clutch drag problem and understand that the HBV leaking over the bell housing caused teh clutch to be contaminated.

I called Vauhxhall today and they quoted £204 for a GM clutch kit, but i wonder if i should buy a cop part instead?

Does anyone have any experience of copy clutches?  If going down this route is anywhere near as bad as my copy cat/downpipe for my 2ltr Omega, i'll avoid it like the plague.

Also - would a clutch change job be ok for a home brew DIYer like me?
I can change cambelt, plugs, brakes, install LPG ok but not too sure about a clutch?  sounds a bit difficult.

Can't comment on Mig clutches specifically, but for generic aftermarket, pick a named brand like AP/Lockheed (now Dephi, I think?) or LUK - both OEMs.  QH stuff used to be good, but not used it for a while.

Avoid "Power.." stuff - half the time it's just remanufactured (refurb) stuff and TBH a waste of time - and i've wasted a weekend, only to have to put the old one back in because the "new" one wouldn't release at all.

For example - if GM is £200, LUK/Delphi is £100 and Powercr@p is £50, i'd go for the LUK one.

I agree to an extent with Phil's last reply. You are also likely to get  better warranty cover on a correctly fitted Gm clutch. Less likely to fail as well
Personally I would also factor in the expected lifespan. I am not sure how long they last on miggys but imo I would say its unlikely to need doing again unless you tow a house about or have a tendance to drag race off the lights

Mark, Sutton Auto Factors.....they sell the LUK clutch kits.

I seem to recall the originals are Borg and Bek

Sutton should have the LuK kits which were OEMs for clutch and flywheel.
Use some 600 wet & dry on flywheel face then degrease.

Thanks guys, i take it that a LUK kit would be ok....

I don't mind paying a bit more for a GM part, but if LUX is ok with you guys i'll give them a go...

I had a bad experience with non-GM cat/downpipe for my 2.0, so though i'd ask first.  In fact the cat problems i had a few years back were the reason i forst joined OOF, so wasn't that bad really!  

I've looked at my trusty Haynes manual and the clutch replacement seems straight forward.  Would you chaps agree?  one man job on the drive with stands and a jack?

TC price for GM Clutch kit for a y26se is £173.75 + VAT

LUK are bloody good kits! made in the shire aswell!!

QH kits use LUK Plates & a made in taiwan calm unit

Omegas clutch is a fairly straightforward job as its RWD and would be alot easier than a v6 vectra b or a mondeo Mk 4 Mk5 Diesel!!! (really hard)!!!

Straightforward job, you need the front up on stands or ramps and may need to jack one rear wheel so you can rotate propshaft to reach all the bolts.
Gearbox CofG is much further back than you might guess, about 2/3 back when placing your jack.
Both front downpipes have to come off. All bellhousing bolts are reached from underneath, various bolt lengths so keep them in order.

I use a piece of wood between crossmember and sump to limit the engine movement once box is off to protect the engine mounts.
