V6 auto running hot
« on: 22 July 2008, 19:02:36 »

Hi all, This is my first of hopefully not too many cries for help regarding my omega.

The thing is it seems to be running very hot to me, the temp gauge reads between 90 and 95 ish under normal conditions but when I get out of the car I can hear a fan running under the bonnet (even if the climate has been set in eco mode.) and the warm draught from under the car is worryingly warm. Also the engine and coolant pipes etc are very hot to the touch??

The main concern for me though is after a six mile drive home from work with very light traffic if any. if i turn the engine off and then try to re start the hot engine, sometimes it just will not fire untill it has cooled for a while which is annoying  >:(

The car is an R plate CDX 2.5 V6 auto, please please help as some of my colleagues said I was stupid to buy an old vauxhall and I don't want them to be proved right!!  :-[

Many thanks, Jim.

Jim, 90-95 degC is about on the money for a good engine to operate at for optimum efficiency. The fans will also continue to run for a short period after the engien is off to stop heat soak in the rad...

As for the trouble when hot starting, any engine light on at all?

Can you read the fault codes (check out the maintenance guides for info on how to read them with a paper clip!)

Halfway up the scale is normal, if 95 is mid point on yours then it's probably ok.
It will run hotter in eco because the front fans will not be turning under normal conditions.
Main fan run on after shutdown is normal if the temperature is 95 or so. The auxiliary coolant pump at the top of the radiator may also run after shutdown.
Difficult starting when hot may be crank position sensor, search for paperclip test and check for 19 code stored.
There are two very hot cats underneath, plenty of hot air will blow off them.

Jim the heat coming from under the mega is quite something to behold when you first get one, but it is normal.

As for your starting problems, that needs further investigation and you are in the right place for help with that! As said does the ems light come on when you get this problem, and does a paperclip test show any codes?

As everyone has said, all normal, if mid point on your temp guage is 95 deg, in hot weather it may go up to 98 deg, at this point all the fans will kick in and reduce temp back to 95 deg.
Omega's are great cars and you are on the best forum for help.

if the fans kick in 'cos of temperature rise but then cut out when you turn off the engine / ignition instead of continuing to cool the rad, is this an error? and if so what is the fix?

If the engine temperture is at normal to hot the fans should run on for a few minutes, only 2 or 3 after the engine has been switched off, just to reduce the peak temp.

Thanks for your help again chaps I will try to be breif I have not noticed any engine lights on at all although it has only failed to start twice. Both times the engine was hot  (95 deg ish) and before hand was running as sweet as a nut!  :y

I am intrigued by the paper clip test and I will do a search for it and then all being well report back with any codes i find, is there a fault code list anywhere on this site?

As I said before I am so pleased with this family bus and I want to keep it going for as long as possible.   :)

P.s sorry if I am worrying too much it's just that  4 years ago I had an S plate vectra cd diesel estate which was the biggest lemon I have ever owned.......Honestly when I polished it you  could smell the zest !!

Cheers Jim.

19, replace crank position sensor. There is more than one type, easiest to  find the part number on the old one.
It's located close to the oil filter, has a heat shield cable coming from it.
Route the cable for the replacement clear of hot components.

Best method when fitting a new 'crank sensor', cut the cable at each end (make sure it's the correct cable) as it is impossible to use the same route and as already said just run the cable away from anything hot ie exhaust.
P.S. Crank sensor is a very common fault.
