Overheating - please help!

sorry if i dont use the correct names for parts and terms but hope u understand... while at the meet today it was noticed that the water pipe leading from my radiator deflates (goes flat) after the engine is turned off, suggesting that i have got air getting into the system. with the engine turning (sorry that i cant remember your name, u was wearing the orange toruses!) cleared loads off air from the system.

then on the way home my temp gauge was going mad, sometimes going past the 100c mark when stationary, then dropping to 95c when in motion. THEN when i got home i popped open my bonnet to a strange noise like slurping the last bits of a milk shake through a straw, this sounded like it was coming from the main area of the engine or slightly towards the rear.

wondering if anyone could shed some light on this, it was suggested at the meet it may have something to do with when im running on lpg the installer may have mucked up the cooling system

Not uncommon for the plumbing to be wrong on LPG installs on the omega.  I had to re-route mine as have many others on the forum.  Still may not be the problem though.  

Try taking the expansion cap off for 20 mins or so while the engine is running and see if that sorts the problem.

This would indicate that your inwards/ outwards pressure relief valve
on your coolant expansion bottle is blocked or faulty.

When you switch off the engine, the coolant/ air in your system cools
down and contracts and the pressure drops in your sealed sytem as
the volume in coolant drops below the fixed capacity of your system.
To prevent a negative pressure, relevant to ambiant, the pressure
relief valve vents inwards and allows coolant and atmospheric
pressure to equalise.

In your case, as it appears not to be functioning, your top coolant
hose collapses to reduce the volume of your coolant system.
The reason your top hose usually collapses, is because it's subject
to a greater temperature range than the other hoses and softens
more than the other hoses.

If you examine your cap, you'll see 4 vertical slots inside the internal
screw thread that facilitate the inward/ outward venting. In the centre
of the cap you'll see the black valve with small vent holes in it.

Bleed the air out of your system with plenty of 'Burping' of your
top hose and renew the the expansion bottle cap.

Once you have the system functioning correctly, you can then see
if your symptoms persist on a system that is at least working correctly.
If not, return to this thread, don't start a new one so that we lose the
history, and tell us again what's happening.

Pity you didn't have a bit more time Snips... I might have been able to completely bleed the coolant system for you.  Really good to see you and I hope that leg heals soon... That operation must have been a killer!  :y :y :y

The story is.....

Heater performance is virtually non-existent when idling, even worse when on lpg. Run at moderate RPM, after I'd bled a load of air out, and the heater gets a little warmer. The collapsing top hose happens when running, and was completely airlocked (which I managed to clear most of before the poor lad had to go and see the nurse!). Running on petrol the circulation seems better, although not right! On LPG it's dreadful. Thermostat is definitely opening OK as once I cleared the top hose it went red hot!!! There's definitely a flow issue here, which could easily still be air.

I had a quick poke about on his LPG system, although it's only a couple of months old so didn't actually touch anything, and can't quite make out where the coolant feeds are coming from... Looks like they've taken the feed from before the HBV (correctly) but returned into the lover of the heater matrix pipes, both connections with "T" connectors (I think) although the engine bay was far too hot to poke about in TBH :o :o :o

It also sounds like there's a slight Vacuum leak, although the car does seem to idle too well for that to be the case  :-/ :-/ :-/

This car really needs a trip back to the installers to have the coolant routing checked/changed. I would recommend taking the feed directly from the coolant bridge to the Vaporiser, and then returning to the engine side of the HBV. This basically gives the vaporiser a constant feed and seens to be the best option as far as I have seen. Kevin did this and his runs like a dream.

This could be either more air working it's way out or localised boiling... Hard to tell the difference really without hearing it myself.

It will have run quite hot anyway because it was scorching Saturday afternoon but still sounds like there's more air in the system.

cheers for all your help and ill be on the phone to my installer in the morning and suggest what u have recommended. hope your install goes without any hickups

Don't let him fob you off either... Make sure he's aware that all was fine before they laid their hands on it!!!

I hope the legs are feeling better soon and good luck with the fitters... Keep us posted!

p.s. I'm still waiting for the tank so can't get much done at the moment but hoping to get the front end done over the next 10 days or so and have it running by the end of the month!  :y :y :y
