Incorrect Temp reading on gauge?
« on: 10 August 2008, 19:02:06 »

Hi guys,
heres a situation to ponder over.
My 3.0 elite has always seemed to run hot on the gauge reading (between 97 & 100). Have checked out everything is working OK & temp drops back when fans switch in. Have always changed coolant every year. 50-50 mix GM pink. It does not however seem to be excessively hot when bonnet is lifted. So I have just learned to live with it. >:( >:(

Went to local breakers this morning. (Mate works there- had a cuppa & a natter)  A mini face lift was there already robbed of most parts, but on the front seat was the "Clocks" module.
Give him a fiver for it and thought I would experiment & swap with my one just to see if I got the same reading on the temp gauge.

Quite an easy job - after readfing the maintenance guide on here - out in about 15 mins.  Other one back in - in 10 mins. :) :)

I am gob smacked that this gauge reads betwwen 90 & 95 max after a decent run 20 miles was rock stedy at 92 ish.

So it seems there may be a tolerance on the gauges themselves and my original one runs HOT!

Have now switched back to original module and it is reading high as it was before. 97 -100

What do you think?

Regards Al   :y :y

I'm guessing your old one had no config on it, seen that before on another mini facelift.

I've got it the other way round - changed engines (hence temp senders) and it now runs 10 degrees cooler - fans come in 10 degrees earlier as well...was there a change in senders/gauges at some point?

Hi Phil,  Senders or gauge had not been changed previously. With this other gauge fitted now- My fans are cutting in at a lower temp as well, so it seems that the gauges are maybe not tested & calibrated the same. Previous owner said it had always run at that high temp on gauge & that VX told him it was a common thing for the V6's. Think I will put the new gauge in though - just somehow I feel more comfortable with it showing 90 - 92 ish than 97 -100. ::) ::)

My bad choice of words, Big Al..I wonder if Vauxhall/Opel changed them at some point - sometime around 1995/6?  My cars a '95, but the engine was a '96 (I think).  Just seems strange we have both had similar issues - although opposites!

Could be a number of things...at the end of the day, I know where mine sits on the gauge.  If it didn't have any numbers, i (we)'d be none the wiser!

Quite right there Phil,
If gauge were just from Blue to Red we would all be quite happy with the needle sitting somewhere around middle-ish.
