Gearbox dying?
« on: 13 August 2008, 19:52:43 »

History....

Wasnt changing as smooth as it was, so did an ATF & filter change....
getting on for 10K or so ago.

Started slipping again not after, so topped it up, got a litre or so in. (overflow was similar to what went in)

Last week, started slipping / overrevving again, got another litre or so in, all fine, overflow was brownish, but smelt sweet.

Done about 600 miles since, and started over revving again.

Car has done 121K now.

Any ideas, is it new AR35 time?  or anything else I should look at.
Gearbox ECU is at latest version.

If the fluid is low every time you top it up I'd be looking for a leak... Is the coolant looking OK? Just wondering about the heat exchanger in the radiator.

No other signs of leakage?

In my experience the fluid smells oily but not burnt and can be brown if it's been in a healthy gearbox but starts to smell obviously burnt when there's a problem. You might be able to see debris in it if you drain a little off into a jam jar.

IF there is a leak, my guess is it will be one of the 2 sumps which I removed (will recheck torque's when I get a chance).  Put some runoff in a jar, was brown, but no debris in it, didnt smell that different to new stuff.

Behaved itself today.
