Well eventually got the alternator off, the top bolt was a problem until I used a small torque wrench from uunderneath, my ratchet is too big!  Cleaned up the alternator although it didnt look too bad.  Refitted with a second power cable, some nice 4AWG.  Getting the belt on was ridiculous, it took 3 of us as it was so tight!  I dont know how I managed to get it on by myself last time, should it be that difficult?  Its a genuine Vauxhall belt aswell.  Anyway it looks like I will need to try a new alternator as it still isnt working.  Strange as it gets worse when the engine has been running for a short while.  I will be picking up a new alternator from Mark at some point this week and starting all over again :(

Hopefully will be able to do it a bit quicker next time now I know how to get at everything but I wont be able to get the belt on unless there are 3 of us again.  We had to hook it over all the pulleys etc and tensioner and then force it onto the big roller in the middle with another person turning the crank pully aswell, what a job!

If anyone wants to volunteer to help me do it next time then give me a shout.

Cheers,

Richard
You will have to back off the tensioner to its full length of travel to get the belt back on.But it does sound a bit tight, have you changed it since last time you did it?
This will be of no help but if there is no sign of a problem with alt. by external exam. then i would not have put it back on, thinking being, it must be internal problem.

I needed it for work today do will have to get one and fit it this week at some point. I did have the tensioner all the way to the stopper but still didn't want to go on. The belt was new a few k ago when I changed tensioner and was genuine Vauxhall. Anyone got any tips for getting the belt on for next time?

You are actually releasing the tensioner aren't you?  Socket onto the hex head in the middle and turn it against the internal spring (clockwise from memory) - should be easy with a normal 3/8 rachet..sorry if this is a daft question...

Well I would like to say a big thankyou to Marks DTM for changing my alternator over this evening.  He did a cracking job and sorted a vac leak and a couple of other bits at the same time  :y

He found the reason the belt was so tight was due to the alternator not being fitted to its top bracket correctly, once the new alternator was fitted properly the belt just dropped on.  So whoever had fitted it previously had not done it properly and I just put it back the way it came off  ::)

Now just got to keep an eye on the charging and make sure there are no further issues.

Once again, thanks very much Mark.

Cheers,

Richard

Yes low down torque feels much better now, used to feel like it was hesitating, now feels much smoother.  Its amazing what a little bit of pipe can do!
