Battery Siren...
« on: 20 August 2008, 12:59:39 »

Hi,

I've just returned from a 3 month overseas work trip and my 2000 2.5 V6 LPG has been sat on the drive.  Initially I was only supposed to be away for 2 weeks so didn't bother to disconnect the battery doh!

So I take the battery off, turning the iginition switch on and off as it says in the book to disable the battery siren and charged the battery.  So when I put the battery back I switched the ignition on and off again before reconnecting, but the battery siren goes off whenever the battery is connected!

The good news is that the car started first time!  But the battery siren keeps going off whenever I connect the battery, whether I fiddle with the ignition swith or not!

Any ideas?? and is the siren easy to get at so I can disconnect it?

Many Thanks in advance!!!

Sounds like the batteries in the power sounder have died. A common problem.

The sounder is under the scuttle panel, behind the driver's side front suspension turret.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for your reply.

If I take the car for a run ( siren and all!) will the batteries recharge?? or is it best just to disconnect/remove??

Thanks

If the alarm doesn't silence when you start the car I would imagine the other failure mode of the power sounder has kicked in - namely that the battery has leaked internally and has caused it to malfunction. So, removal is probably the best option.

Just disconnect it ---- if you have a search around the forum, several members have done the same thing, and even taken the beastie apart to see what's amiss!  As mentioned above the internal batteries have had it, in all probability.

Thanks for the replys!!

In the end I took the car up the road with the siren blaring (Got a few funny looks!) and after 2 or 3 miles the siren went off and all seems OK at the mo........

Does anyone know if the sirens batterys take a charge from the alternator?

I think I'll still have a look at the siren though just to see if anything is leaking, as saw a post in the eleccy section saying that if it leaks it can cause other expensive probs!!!

Thanks again.

I had a problem with the 'Vauxhall Sounder' alarm activating when driving in torrential rain, which only happened twice in about two years. After sounding for about thirty seconds it would go silent and then no more problems for months until I encountered another very heavy rainstorm.

I removed the sounder and prised off the back of the unit and, although it was now dry, there were signs of previous water ingress. Not surprising, really, when you realise the pillocks at Vauxhall have fixed the sounder directly under the scuttle drain!!

I replaced the back of the sounder and sealed it with silicone mastic, especially round the aperture where the connector comes through the backplate. Since sealing the unit I have had no more problems with siren activation.

Perhaps, given the wet summer we have had this year, water got into your car's sounder while you were away and has since dried out.
