Has anybody experienced difficulties removing one of the Cartridge type oil filters fitted to the 2.6 and 3.2 engines? I have turned the darned thing anti clockwise a full 360 Deg, but it will not come off or apart. I was expecting the top cap (with the 24mm Hex on top) to move and leave the cylinder stationary, but the whole lot turns, allbeit axtremely tightly.   Any help would be appreciated

It's been over tightened beforehand then - should only be 15nm. Looks like you'll have to unscrew the whole housing then take it to whoever last changed the filter and demand they pay for a new one unless they can seperate the lid from the housing / .

Considering changing mine to a spin on filter as the lid requires about 20 revolutions before it comes off (fine threads) which is a right pain as you can only get a quarter of a turn at a time with the steering idler etc in the way.

If I keep screwing the housing in an ant-clockwise direction then' will the whole thing eventually come off? I was hoping the Haynes manual would say something, but of course they only cover the 2.5 and 3.0 V6 which has the canister type.

Yes, I'm sure it does. You can definitely take it off completely.

There's a guide somewhere on here covering replacement with the canister type, but I'm damned if I can find it. Someone will post the info. I'm sure, using their 'crystal ball' tool.

Thanks for the help people. The modification sounds interesting. I shall have to investigate the availability of threaded adaptor PN  90412159, before trying again to remove mine. And like you say, tying to get access behind the steering idler is a right pain.

Thought this was going to be a just a quick oil and filter change!  Never mind eh!

Your suddering from the fact a tosser replaced the filter last time and overtightened the lid.

I find them easy to remove.

One option worth trying is to hold the body with a strap wrench or some large wate pump pliers.

I agree - when this happened to me, (first time ever) I held the housing with a "boa constrictor" and the cap popped off.

If it's torqued up sensibly, it's IMO easier to work with than a spin on filter.

It's meant to be 15nm - I struggle to get the torque wrench in there. I CAN do it if I'm careful enough, but given that it's a rubber seal, I find a "little nip" is enough.

Strap type oil filter wrench from Halfords worked very well for me, here's the last pic taken on my camera before I ran over it!



With the wrench gripping the housing and braced against the engine as shown, you can apply a fair bit of undoing force to the lid!

The housing will come slightly loose when disturbed but there's a 27 mil nut inside holding it to the block. Once the lid is off you need to tighten this big nut so the housing is nice and snug against the block again. And as people have said, the lid just needs to be 'home', not tight.
