ATF Query

I had a look at my ATF level at lunchtime today because the box has become a tad rough.

It took a little, but what is more concerning is that the fluid that came out was quite brown.

Is it usual for it to go brown so fast? It's only done about 700 miles since an ATF Change and complete gearbox cleanout (sumps off) etc.

Worth changing again, or is something wrong to make it this brown so soon?

I believe there's still alot of fluid in the oil cooler and T/C.

 I beleive you can not get all of the atf out when you drop the sumps? About a 3rd stays in the torque converter and oil cooler as said. So yes probably is normal, esp. if the old oil was in poor condition.  So straight away your nice new atf is contaminated with whats left in the tc! Takes 2 or 3
changes to dilute the old remaining oil. Iirc!

Yep, tis normal. As mentioned previously, there is a lot of fluid in the Torque Convertor.

Think the smell is a giveaway, I had similar when I did 2 close topups

There won't have been any old oil in the cooler or the TC because they were both also emptied and flushed with new...

The main problem is that it's holding it in 3rd for too long on the flat and not locking up - takes a while and then goes in, usually with a thud  :-/

I just wonder if the knock sensor /lambda fault code issue is making it a bit eratic..

In theory it is likely to give a rougher change with the kncok sensor fault as the gearbox requests the timing to be retarded to smooth the change, with this fault the timing is already retarded!

Before you fitted this box, you did check the thrust bearing didn;t you?

Before you fitted this box, you did check the thrust bearing didn;t you?

Bearing or washer, Mark?
The Box has got new sonnax thrust washers in it...

Brown ain't good. Last box I saw with brown oil in was the 1st box on my tractor :o

Even the MV6, 150k and 10yrs on the orignal fluid still thin and nearly black...

As an aside, JamesV6CDX, get the box working perfectly before doing the gearbox software update (which we can do any time) for the reasons I said when you got the car, if that makes sense?  Don't want the newer software to be used to mask a bigger issue with the box.

Quite possibly, esp if you still have that knock sensor issue...

Engine load is a key variable for the gearbox in the decision to shift or not to shift. It will also be getting a false reading if the engine is producing less power than the engine ECU parameters suggest, so it's very likely that the engine issues are contributing and they need to be eliminated.

Any improvement in them, BTW? EGR valve happy now?
