Side airbag tech 2 question...
« on: 01 September 2008, 20:02:56 »

Quick question for a friend of a friend of a...

Vectra related but all the same systems I think - if you put an older (non - side airbags) interior in a newer (side airbags) car, obviously you'll have the airbag light on cos it's missing its side bags.

I seem to remember reading on here (or before we migrated from vxon) that tech 2 can tell the SRS ecu the side bags are not present, in order to turn the light off without having to trick the system with resistors or whatever.  That right?

Either way you should be able to get it working, but are you in theory invalidating your insurance by removing such a safety feature?

Cheers,

Liam

Don't know about Vectra, but I have not found a way to reconfigure the Omega ones.  Guessing if it is configurable, its a 'one off' setting when new.

Ah OK thanks guys.

My real wonder is the insurance question.  You'd have to be pretty unlucky if it were discovered, but would you be technically invalidating it by removing such a safety feature?

If it's a factory standard fit then yes you have altered the spec.
Not sure I'd want to remove safety devices anyhow :y

The "My Naff Code Reader" system I have can configure the airbag ecu to think it has the right combination of airbags, i.e. driver only, driver/passenger only or driver/passenger and side bags.

Your insurance company would only likely find out if your vehicle was sent off for analysis by VOSA or similar if you were believed to be at fault for a serious rtc. Even so, from past experience I very much doubt they'd query the airbag ecu unless they were on a witchunt.

Vehicle have disabling switches for airbags so as far as I see it, it's a matter of personal choice

Don't think you get the option on the later ones with 4 airbags to disable side.

In virtually all but slightest knock, car will be assessed.  The assessors will check what std safety systems are on car - ABS/TC/ESP/SRS.  They will pay particular attention to these if an injury claim is made...
