Noise from rear (of car!)
« on: 22 September 2008, 20:48:07 »

Hi,

Am new to the forum (and a bit of a technology numpty) so please forgive any mistakes!

I have a 2.2 GLS with 38000 on the clock. Car runs very well, it's very quiet but I've noticed a sort of whirring noise when the car is moving. The noise emanates from the back. It doesn't sound like something catching (brakes, say) and is only noticeable when you set off (up to 20mph or so) or when slowing down for the last couple of hundred metres.

My previous car was a '96 2.0 Omega and the engine made a racket so I never got to hear anything from the transmission. I'm not sure if this noise I'm hearing with the new one is a problem  :-?or just the usual noise the Omega transmission makes.

If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

hmm, a noise from the rear below 20! Only ever had v6s so probably not the best person to reply. But the transmisson aint dissimilar and cant say ive heard what you describe. I take it its def. speed related and not revs related? Not speaker interferance? And nothing your carrying in the boot perhaps?
Maybe see if the dif has an oil leak? Has it done much towing? And how loud is it? Might the radio fix it?

Hi.

i have what sounds like the same noise coming from the same place.
At first i thought it may be a brake binding, or a warped disc that was rubbing as it sounds a bit like that, but having checked those out it isnt.  I have checked for fluid leak and cant see anything. Changed the tyres incase it was that......still nothing!
Not the exhaust cos i checked that.

if i were you, i'd try ruling out the above first as they are fairly easy to do.

The only things left i can think of are handbrake shoes catching, or a transmission issue.

My car drives fine other than not so smooth gear changes, which should be better when i change the atf, so for the  mo, a loud radio fixes my problem!

if none of that hellps then i would check the differential (i think its that in the bell housing at the back between the two rear wheels) although i dont now how (yet) as in my limited opinion, it may be a wear issue there.  till i find out how  to check this, i guess the radio will suffice.

I'm sure others will be along with more helpful input, but thought i'd let you know what i started to check, for what methinks be the same problem.

Oh yea, does yours make the noise so bad if rolling without stepping on the accelerator?

Your car has very low mileage which in one way is good, however it maybe the lack of use has contributed to one or two things being a little stiff or seized, first off I would strip down the rear brakes including the internal handbrake shoes and make sure it's all free of dust & rust.

Thanks for all that, folks - gives me a lot to think about.

I'm hoping it's brakes; it was stood at an indy dealers for a few weeks before I bought it so could be handbrake sticking.

The noise is audible rolling to a stop in neutral, though I haven't tried it with the engine switched off (need a quiet road and there don't seem to be any near me).

I'll check the brakes first - thanks once again.  ;)

wooly wooly woo? Yeah, your all going to think im mental now. I had a listen today and i heard, for the first time, that noise. Almost metalic or a bubbling noise? Very quiet, had to have the radio off to hear it, and then the fans off to hear it properly. Tried opening the window but road traffic and wind noise just drowned it out. Seemed to be just before the box changed to second on a couple of occassions. But the noise seemed to come further back than the gear box. Only does it for a couple of seconds then stops. Is that it? Its not is it? Ok i am mental!

Check the inner propshaft bearings--grab the shaft at diff end and see if there is any slack vertically or horizontally, not in or out.
