omega unwanted noises and steering problem
« on: 23 September 2008, 21:01:38 »

Hi all,

I have some problems with my 1997   2.5 V6 omega, and would appreciate any advice.

Firstly, upon starting the engine, there is a very loud fan type noise.  The noise cuts off after around a minute of being started.  If the engine is warm and the car is started, the noise stops after around 20 seconds.

Secondly, (maybe linked to the first problem).  When traveling round corners, there is a whine, and a grinding noise, and it can be felt through the steering wheel.  It actually shakes the steering wheel.  The sharper I turn the more severe it gets.
My thought was maybe the power steering pump, but I could be totally wrong.  Any help appreciated, cheers bob

The first one you mentioned sounds like the Secondary Inlet Pump, you can disconnect the pump, it is in front of the passenger side front wheel.
As for the second I ain't sure... does it make this sound if you turn from lock to lock?

1st prob is SAI pump. Unplug it.

2nd, possibly wheel bearing?

Thanks for your advice.

The steering noise is ok when still (lock to lock).  It only happens whilst on the move.

Thinking about it, there is a slight whine whilst moving straight as well, but gets very bad whilst cornering.  Almost like the tyre's are rubbing on the wheel arches.

Thanks again, will let you know the outcome.

Thanks everyone,

The first problem was the secondary inlet pump.

The second problem was just low power steering fluid, believe it or not.  Sorted, unless there is a leak of course!!

Thanks again
