My car's gone all rubbish!
« on: 09 September 2008, 13:54:30 »

Hello, my car seems to be running really badly at the moment, there are several issues - it's hard to describe but it almost sounds like a diesel when it runs, the idle is very up and down, you can feel the seats shaking when sat at traffic lights etc. It also seems to have lost a fair bit of power until you get to around 3500-4000 rpm where it suddenly comes back again and it seems to loving petrol at the moment too!
I did a paperclip test and no faults came up there - any ideas?

Which one is the vacuum hose? I have changed the plugs recently so anything that was moved to do that has been put back on - the problem was there before I did the plugs.
Not sure I fancy taking it all apart to check the cambelt  :-/

Ok cheers I'll have a look. If that is the case - what fault would that point to?

I did, I also got
135   Telltale (Checklight) Voltage Low
But reading through the forums this seems nothing to worry about...

ok, a phew things, when is the belt due? 40k or 4 year service intervals.
check the vacume system and multy rams, have you had any water leak issues with hbv as this can spray water on the dis pac, which could be buggerd anyway. im not sure if that engine will detect a missfire, :-/ anyone?

Cambelt was done in feb 07 I think? Cambelt party at TheBoy's house, only about 13,000 miles ago. No water leaks that I'm aware of, never needed to top up the coolant.
I guess I then need advice on how to check vacuum and multirams!

There is a guide in maintenance section re vacume and multi rams. But maybe check your ignition system first. Either leads or dip pack. Maybe pull each lead and check for damage to the rubber at the base, that the connection to the dis pack is good and that they are connected in the right order. If the leads are good then i guess that only leaves the dis pack. I bit of a pig to change. But get some other opinions first, i dont want you to got changing the dis pack on just my say so.
Ps maybe worry about the multi rams when your missfire is sorted. Hth

Well... The v6 is very smooth because it has a balanced firing order, each cylinder firing balances against the others and gives a smooth vibration free ride. If 1 or more cylinders does not fire in turn
or misses its turn to fire, hence the term missfire, them the engine firing order is no longer balanced and you get a bad vibration. Open the bonnet and look when its playing up and youll see the engine jumping from side to side as the the cylinders miss their turn to fire.
So did you notice any damage to the plug leads when you changed the plugs? Esp, round the base, at the plug end, any nics or tears?

Well it's been a while but today I changed the leads and dispack and the vibration and shaking has stopped so thanks all for that! One of the leads did have a nick in it so may have got away with just changing those but all done now. After finding out where the multirams are, I noticed the front is definitely not moving - got too dark to check the rear one, suppose this is why I have lost a lot of poer up till 3.5-4k rpm?
Any help on solving this last bit would be greatly appreciated  :y
