Power steering fluid
« on: 07 October 2008, 09:53:31 »

I'm losing a small amount of fluid daily ... about 6-10 drops on the ground overnight .. having a great deal of trouble working out why ... do the pipes go "porous" with age ?, Main pipe from the reservoir is always "damp" with fluid but not running as far as I can see .. all clips seem tight. I'm wondering if it only leaks "under pressure" - no-one here to turn the wheel while I look ... and it's pissin down .. :(

Now need to top up the reservoir.. Book of lies says Dexron III .. but I seem to recall someone saying it should be Dexron II .. but  I can't find the post .. :( (even using google search !!) ... am I going mad (probably) or senile (definitley) .... ??

I have a feeling Dex II is the official recommendation. However, remember that Dex III is just a revised specification of the same product, so they should be backward compatible.

It's also not going to be tested to the extremes of its' specification in a PAS system so I would say use either - whatever you have handy.

Although the Technical Information System states it should be 1.3 litres of Dex III.......and then adds the following correction as a field remedy (1570)

Quote

Complaint: Oil for Power Steering incorrectly specified in TIS.

Remedy: TIS 2000 indicates that the power steering oil specification for Vivaro is
Dexron III. This is now incorrect.
The original fluid was Dexron III  (PN 90 510 269, Cat-No. 19 40 763) which
was used to service certain power steering and automatic transmission fluids
(ATF).

This oil is no longer available so a new version of oil Dexron III has been
specified for the affected ATF (PN 93 160 372, Cat-No. 19 40 712) however
this oil is not compatible with power steering systems and should not be
used for this function because this may result in leakages.

To service the power steering system the oil now specified has reverted back
to Dexron II (PN 90 350 342, Cat-No. 19 40 700).

This should prevent any confusion when trying to select the correct oil for
the correct application.

NOTE: This information is valid for all models except Sintra (partnumber
90 513 486, Cat: 19 40 707) and Astra-G/Zafira/Vectra-C/Signum (partnumber
93 160 458, Cat: 19 40 715).

I guess this is still valid info from Mark ..  so off to buy 1/2 a litre of Dexron II

Thanks for your thoughts Kevin    :y :y :y

Interesting... Maybe that Dex III has some additive that's not compatible with the seals / hoses? However, it looks like it was just that particular Dex III as presumably the previous Dex III was OK.  :-/

Sounds like it's best to play it safe. :y

check the clips again. My bottom clip appeared tight - infact it was so tight that it had split part of the hose. I only found out by cleaning the whole pipe with gunk then finding where the oil was comming from - abliet very slowly

yes it is techII
