rust inside wheel arch/door shuts
« on: 09 October 2008, 18:56:13 »

 >:(...when i got the car and washed off all the crap gathered in there i was horrified to find this level of rust on a car 5 years younger and half the miles than the car i just p.x.ed it for...i cant remember the detail of my pre face lift in that area but i am fairly certain the door covered this area much better than this car seems to as previos mig was spotless.

Any ideas why this has happened?
i guess this is a body shop job to sort out?

I had the same area  rust on my elite, ground it right down and treated with krust and then hammerited, most omegas seem to suffer with rust here and under the door rubbers,i removed my door rubbers also and ground down to bare metal, got local body shop to blow in tops of doors and fitted new rubbers (also filled channels under rubbers with waxoil) ,later cars are supposed to be better protected but that's not my experience with several potential purchases showing rust in the same areas as my pre facelift so i decided to my keep my mini facelift. :)

Unfortunately it's not just down to the corrosion protection of the metal Chris :-/.
I think a lot of it is down to poor panel/chassis design, if only they had made a solid chassis return at the arch rather than make the door edge part of the arch line, it collects crap and the door rubbers seal on it to keep it moist ::) (my old MKII Cav was the same and Nova before that)

just have a look at a VW 4 door rear arch, much better design in my mind but probably spoils GM lines :-?
