Oil Leak....
« on: 09 October 2008, 18:52:51 »

Hi All,

I've got an oil leak and it looks like its coming from the oil filter housing although it may be further up and dripping on the oil filter....

Is this a common place to spring a leak? I tweaked the housing a little, and its still leaking, but only when the engine is running!

Any advice??

Cheers

Do you have the paper filter in an ally housing? Could be that some ham fisted fitter has swung off the filter casing when he/she re-fitted it & cracked it or  .... trapped the 'O'ring around the casing.
Difficult to diagnose without looking.  ;)

Hi Andy,

Yes its the ally housing type and yes your probably right, but its difficult to tell for sure without taking it off and you can't really see properly from above either!

Its tricky lying on your back holding a torch and a oily rag!!! Could do with a decent set of ramps.....  ::)

Cheers

Take the endcap off and check the seal ... clean the area with a bit of rag and stick the endcap back on ... 15 Nm max torque IMSMC .. its stamped on the lid somewhere .. .. do NOT overtighten.

Whilst its off check that the "body" is not loose . if it is .. tighten up .. carefully ... ally cracks easily ...

But .... ramps will bring their own problems. If you try to drive up most sets of ramps, the lower part of the front bumper will hit the top of the ramps way before the front wheels are any where near going up the ramp. If you've had the Omega's superior predecessor  ::) you'll already have a board/plank/extensions so that you can drive up the ramp without bu66ering up your bumper!

The oil filter housing dosn't look like its got an end cap.... It's a cast ally housing with a 24mm nut on the end, which is all part of the housing...... :(

Filter is either a canister type (6 & 7 ).. or an ally case (8 & 11 ) type that has an end cap (8) .. might LOOK like one piece if some monkey has done it up to stupid levels without the oil ring (10) ...

If its been done too tight and you've tried to undo it .. you might have undone the case to block bit and damaged oil seal (12)

Aaaah yes I see now!  Thanks for the diagram, it did look like one peice when I was lying on my back peering at it with a torch!!!

I guess the best plan would be to get a set of seals and strip it all down hoping that the housing isn't cracked or damaged!

Thanks again  :y

depending on the height of the ramps and angle it shouldnt damage the bottom of the bumper (flexible section) so i just drive straight up the ones i use and no problems/damage caused

My bumper hits the top of my ramps if I try to use them without the extensions.

lol thats unlucky, how high are the ramps you use? the ones i use must be 20cm maybe and they dont catch on the bumper, just on the flexi' lower part

Mine's bigger than yours then!  ::) 9 & half inches! Oooer!  ::)  :y

I tend to use the extensions when ever I put any car on the ramps, it makes the slope more gentle.
