Type of antifreeze...
« on: 24 October 2008, 12:47:08 »

After doing a lot of reading on antifreeze i still unsure what the best type to use is for my 2.5 V6 (Red, blue, green, oat?) at the monent it has not got much of a colour but I still get two rings to float on the hydrometer. Also what is the best way to drain the system to get most of the solution out. (I recently bought the car)

Most here use the GM red stuff.

You get get about 1/2 the old out using the red tap at the bottom of the rad.

To empty it all in one go, you need to remove the water pump, only really practical when you are changing the cambelt.

Drain as Jimbob says through the red tap. Refill with water.  Run engine a bit to circulate.
Repeat as many times as possible until it runs clear or you get bored.

After the final drain, you then have a system half full of pretty much clean water.  Then pour a full can of neat red antifreeze in - top up if required with more water.

That will give you a near 50% mix which is ideal.

The red long life antifreeze is about a tenner from Vx on trade club - cheaper than most factors sell the blue stuff for..
