Some power steering questions
« on: 23 October 2008, 23:16:36 »

Hi,
my power steering pump leaks and i suspect that there is something lose in there or woren out, if that can be so I have some questions:

1. what is best solution repairing mine or get used one (im a little sceptical on those used cause all that cars have lots of kilometars on them)
2. how do i repair it and what parts beside sealings can be repaired in it
3. is there any way (my dad tells me that on Mercedes there is one screw that can be thiten and that eliminate steering wheel movement) to adjust power steering
4. how much this work can cost

I'm having some problem with front end of the car and streering, and 1. thing on my list is pump cause it leaks. For now only shock's ware changed.

Hi, i think check the wishbone bushes first of all before you change the pump for play, i dont know about it leaking or any other issues with the pump so cant comment. Wishbones are number one cause of vague stearing, tire wear and pulling on the stearing wheel. Then check the stearing idler for play, you may as well check for broken springs as well, this can also affect the car. There is also a bolt on the stearing box to adjust play, but dont over tighten. When you have done any work ms changed any parts on the car, in the Uk we would then check the geometry of the car to make it drive straight, but i dont know if this is available in croatia?
What problems are you having with the steering?
The omega is not the most accurate with the stearing in my honest opinion, so i would say dont expect it to be perfect.
Chris.

we have geometry to :), and can you post some picture of wishbone bushes.
is there posibility to buy only bushes and not complete wishbone, pump is leaking from somewhere so i nead to repair it. how can i see if bushes and idler are gone, is there some procedure to check that. what about that other thing on wishbone, i dont know what its called in english (on one side there are bushes and on other side is one thing thats moving and that can wore out).

the problem is that car is too wobly, need stearing adjustments when driving, not lot but some minor adjustments, espetilly on bad and bumpy road. The other thing, i got licking noise going ower bumps and other big click when turning from full right to the left, when car is not driving. and there is little play in stearing wheal like there is no solid connection to the stearing wheal and wheals.

yes, the bushes can be pressed out and replaced. You need a 10 ton hydrolic press and its important to have, or make, the correct drifts to put between the press and the bushes to get then out or they will easily get damaged when you put back in. There is a very small outside edge to press on, so its is not an easy job. I have Merle bushes in my wishbones and the car is now much better but there will always be some stretch in the rubber bushes and then the stearing so you will always have to stear into the camber/crown of the road a little bit. Before you press the bushes out, check the king pin/stearing knuckle on the wheel end of the wishbone is not worn first, it is usually ok. If worn you need new wishbones. You may find it easier to find a used set of wishbones from a breaker(car dismantler for used parts) with good steering knuckle and do the work on them before you take your car apart, because if the you can not re build the wishbones you will have no car until its fixed.

The knocking over bumps will probably be drop links (from anti roll bar to suspension strut/shock absorber). The knocking or cracking while turning the steering wheel may be the wishbones grinding on the subframe caused by very worn bushes. Hopefully that will go when the bushes are changed. Always change suspension parts in pairs for a matching set if from a breaker or for new.

Are you sure the oil on the power stearing pump is not coming from the cam cover seals which is directly above it? The breather system may be blocked.  Is it definately power stearing fluid that is leaking?
I have searched for info on the merle(i "think" that is correct spelling?) bushes but i can not find it. I know its there somewhere i have seen it on here. Maybe some other members have the info you need. You will need a pair of drop links, a pair of large bushes and a pair of small bushes to give you a complete set for the car.
See also the guides in maintenance section for,
Cleaning breathers
Changing cam cover gaskits
Changing wishbones. It is important not to tighten the wishbone bolts until the car wheels are fully loaded and on the floor, then tighten as much as possible from under the car, you can then jack up the car again to give better access to tighten to 110nm and then angle tighten.
The drop links are easy, 20 mins. each side.
 Hope this helps.
