all the symptoms i have point to a head gasket gone.first of all i know i have to change the rad cos it's got a hole in it.the header tank is full of mayo but the oil is clean as a whistle,also the engine is running as sweet as a nut,no problems at all.i would have expected some misfire but nothing as yet.any idea what a head job would cost?.thanks to all.

Oil in the water is more likely to be the oil cooler. Especially if the car has been running without antifreeze due to constant top ups with tap water.

had a report from the garage,mayo is also coming out of the hbv,take it that will need replacing as well.thermostat is also knackered.what's the going price for repairing the oil cooler?.

It takes about 5-6hrs to change the cooler.
About £100 for the cooler kit and another £50 in seals and stuff.
The hard work will be flushing out the cooling system, that will take you a couple of weeks of constant flushing

thanks.is there an easy way to flush as it's a bit difficult to get to the bottom hose at the side of the road,also does hbv need changing or will the flush sort it out?.

There's a red pastic drain plug on the bottom of the rad, nearside. Changing the HBV is a good idea anyway since they always seem to fail. Maybe leave it until you're confident most of the gunk is out though, might as well.

dont drive it, youll make things worse. Oil will eat the rubber hoses and seals in your coolant system. Drop the coolant and flush asap. There is a guide on flushing the matrix and changing the cooler.  Make sure your new cooler is stainless steel. Hope helps.

hi guys sorry i haven't replied to thank you for your advice but i've just moved house and it's taken over a month to get back online also a small matter of my daughter getting married at the same time as moving.bad timing i know but the oil cooler was the problem and it's driving fantastically once again.thanks to all.
