Door Rust.
« on: 28 October 2008, 22:35:59 »

How easy is it now for a spray shop to do a proper job of repairing the rust that comes from under the door trims, where glass meets panel.

All those that I've spoken too appear to not want the job based on comments connected with the trim being a bastard to get off/on.

Surely they can obtain new trims once the rust has been treated and the top of the doors resprayed..

Any comments chaps ?

Treating the rust will be a waste of money, as it will just come back in time.

You need to find a decent Bodyshop that is prepared to grind out every last bit of the rust, only then is a repair worth doing.

There's only one way to treat rust, and that is to cut it out. However I'm experimenting with a paint called Epoxy Mastic 1-2-1 which is  two-pack epoxy resin-type paint. I goes off as hard as rock and is sued as a  primer/underseal/chassis paint. I am hoping that it will hold back the rust on my window/door edge, until such time as a proper repair can be done.

I was going to sort mine out but the winter has sneaked up on me! I think if you can get the strips it should be ok, I've had good results from some chemical rust remover on my stone chips.

Does anyone have the part numbers/cost for the strips?

Done mine earlier this year. Door/window sealing strips are no problem to get off and were OK to use again. I just cleaned them up with some back to black and they were as good as new and just pushed back in place.

Rust though will come back it seems , however much you think you have got rid of it all.

Mine on drivers door is just starting to lift the paint in several pin head size spots  and will no doubt get worse over the next few months. This is after a few months of being done , but my car is outside and not garaged.

In my opinion it is not worth paying a bodyshop a big wedge of cash to do it.

Regards, Al

what he said, rear door window strips just pull out with a firm tug or two and the fronts i'm not sure, pull out quite easily but i'm not sure if it's trapped behind the mirror to keep it held on if you get me

Had my mirrors off  for prepping ready for paint. sorry forgot to mention that. But with the mirrors off the strips just pull upwards and off.  Regards Al :y :y
