I did have a go at pulling up the shroud and cover but wasnt sure where or how hard to pull  

A yellow lever to the left(?) of the shift lever.

I didnt get that far ..... i couldn't get the gear lever shroud or black plastic to come out ..... but then i didnt really pull too hard in case i broke something  

They do just pull out  , I pull the rear our first.
