locking a tractors flywheel
« on: 22 November 2008, 13:20:43 »

what is correct way to lock the flywheel on x25td. there is two ruuber bung revealing oval shaped inspection holes in the bellhousing, is this a point to lock the engine. the engine needs locking to remove and exchange fuel pump and to help time the pump when fitted.

According to the info I've been given, the flywheel is locked at No.1 piston TDC on compression stroke to remove the pump.

The locking-pin is inserted through a hole located on the nearside of the engine. The hole is in-board of the bottom-most cylinder-block-to-bellhousing bolt.

When the pump is removed, the woodruff keyway will then point upwards.

SORTED :) :) :)
if anyone has to do this then look on engine side of bellhousing near to starter motor. there is a little rubber bung with a pulling tab that is hiding between 2 fins pull it out and there is the hole to lock the flywheel. take of oil filling cap and you can just see the 1st cam lobe turn engine until the camlobe is just past 12 o clock (cylinder no1 is now 90degrees btdc) and about that point a 8mm drill bit will lock the flywheel from the above mentioned hole. ;)

Good stuff Dean,

Glad you sussed it ...... !
It seems that the whole set-up on these engines is fixed around the No.1 TDC mark.
Some diesels that I've worked on have seperate 'INJ' and 'TDC' marks/locking holes. Obviously then, the 'INJ' mark is ahead of the 'TDC' mark by a few degrees.

Keep us posted!

new pump fitted but wont start. runs for about 2seconds then stops. hvn't put inlet manifold or rad and water hoses back yet but will usually run without inlet manifold even though no help from turbo.
cracked of injectors and they spit fuel ok when turning over.
