2.5 TD engine mountings change how to
« on: 23 November 2008, 13:01:43 »

I get awful vibrations inside—not heard outside—the car when idle, stopping when I gently lift the engine, therefore I plan to change my rubber hydraulic engine mountings which are ready to drop! But I can't find the procedure anywhere on the Web.
What do I have to do prior to lifting the engine ? Any risks doing so ?

Thanks.

reasonably easy the way i did it, undo said mountings on one side then put jack with piece of wood under sump and jack up slowly till you can lift out mounting, replace with new then lower and do up, repeat for other side, do not undo them both at same time as the engine and box will move forward or backwards and you wint get the mountings back on!!!

Thanks.
So you didn't have to remove anything else, like the fan air box?
Is there enough space to lift?
My fan as you know is in place !

nope but i was very careful to check biggest prob is the exhaust as the clearance is ltd but i managed to do it!! and it took away all that naxty vibration on tickover for about a month before it returned with a vengeance then i realised it was the dual mass flywheel playing up!!!

mine was just a slight noise which disappears when the clutch was depressed, sounded like a thrust bearing fault to be honest, but the vibration was the most annoying  part, it wasnt heavy just an annoying bit that shouldnt be there, car would still drive and change gear fine, only other clue was sometimes would get a slight transmission shunt when pulling away!!! but that wasnt there all the time,
dmf is known to be aweak point on this engine !!

OK, I haven't got it yet (143k miles, yours?), but now I know.
Thanks.
I'll keep you informed, it should be done by the end of the week.

Indeed, and totally worth it. It set me back £ 80 for the pair.

I have a vibration on my TD estate. It seems to be worst when cold, not that bad when warm but still there.
How would I know or check if it's the duel mass flywheel (noise doesn't disappear when I depress the clutch) or as I suspect maybe engine mountings.

My TD has a lot of vibrations when cold, but i haven't ever considered it to be anything in particular - maybe mine could be dodgy...?  :-/

Yes most certainly so. The ultimate test is to ask someone strong enough to hold the engine when running idle (press or lift) and listen for the difference inside. If noise does alter, then the engine mountings are down.
