Condensation
« on: 01 December 2008, 07:55:57 »

I know I have seen this mentioned before but cannot remember the outcome.

Since buying my first 3.0 Ive noticed that I get a lot of condensation from the exhaust when running. This appears normal when cold but it appears to also do it when warm. I have noticed that after approx 200 miles I have to top up the expansion tank and I cannot see any leaks anywhere.

Any Ideas anyone??

Hi - I am no expert but the 2 may not be related  - my 3.2 kicks out a fair bit of "steam" from the exhuast and I think that's typical of a large engined car at this time of year.

The water loss may well be the HBV - Heater Bypass Valve - these are a common item to leak and mine was dripping water for a while before I found out where it was coming from, easyish to replace and not expensive.  You can find it if you look into the gap between the top of the engine and the scuttle/bottom of the windscreen - just look for a round black plastic thing (plenty of advice on here about where and what) and look for any evidence of it leaking.

Hope that helps

Likewise I've noticed a fair bit of steam from mine over the past few weeks, car was checked over quite recently so nothing to worry about hopefully!

Yep, the V6 is actualy a pretty efficient engine and as per all good engines, the good combustion of fossil fuel results in lots of water.

This comes out of the back as steam.

What meakes it even more obvious is that the Cats used are pretty good ceramic jobs to which also adds to the steam.

As for water loss, its a case of the usual suspects.....HBV (although its often a bit larger loss than that), stat seal etc

Thanks Chaps

Im used to the 2.0 and heads blowing so sounds like worrying over nothing.

I know where the hbv is but so far am unable to see a leak. Going to carry out a service over the christmas break if it aint too bloody freezing (Ive already got flu) so may be able to see a bit better then.

when working on the car yesterday i noticed a rattly bubbling sound from the back. Further inspection showed water running from the back box john in the exhaust. The noise was water bubbling in the rear exhaust section. Very recent tech2 diagnostic showed zero issues with the car. So yes the omega does produce alot of moisture in my experience.
Any Head Gaskit worries should be directed at the state of the oil and any mayo or a gravey like appearance.

I have had a couple of hbv s go on 2 omegas and usually(not always according to other members on here) hbv failure is guite dramatic and obvious. If its not wet to the touch and no residue then i would suspect a leak in the v of the engine, ie oil cooler cover plate, stat housing or coolant bridge.
You may be able to see in under the plenum with a torch, between the intakes under the throttle body, or from drivers side by egr valve.
