Rocker cover leak
« on: 23 December 2008, 07:43:18 »

hi all
my mechanic on my last ervice said he had noticed a slight leak from the first bolt on the drivers side lower rocker cover so he informed he  had nipped it up however the leak is worse now and to be expected if they are touched. My Question is could i take out each bolt in turn and replace the o ring or are they under the rocker in which case ill have to remove the cover i did notice the slight weep before but is now worse

"O" ring seals are under the plastic rocker cover and you will need to remove it totally to replace them. The cover bolts should only be nipped up 8nm so the more they are tightened the worse the leak will get as you are distorting the plastic cover.
My adise would be to remove the cover, replace the seals and "o"rings then put the black sealant across the half moon ends and put it back together with the bolts correctly torqued up.Then you need to give the entire breather sytem a total clean as if there is any restriction in the small tubes you will be doing the gasket job again sooner than later.
Short term you should slacken off those bolts to 8nm as if gasket is fairly supple it might just move back and seal, but if around bolts then it needs to be done properly.

yeah, like he said.
But use genuine vx seals and gaskits. Black goo round half moons used to be loctite 598 but they superseeded it and cant remember the new number. Its in halfords anyway. Hth
