MV6 Gearbox Concerns...
« on: 30 December 2008, 02:00:39 »

I'm just wondering if the following are signs that now is the time to have a gearbox strip down?

When cold 1st very notchy but engages ok, but requires more force and guidance than when warm.
When cold, reverse is almost impossible to engage unless I double declutch, select 3rd then 4th. It then slots in nice and smooth, no problem at all.

Car is genuine 86000 miles with FSH.

Any info much appreciated, thanks.

have seen talk of changeing the manual gear box oil on here, never done it myself so cant advise. I suppose should ask if the clutch is disengaging fully?

I would bleed the clutch and change the gearbox oil before paying for a strip down. The manual gearboxes are very strong and 86000 miles is nothing ;)

Thanks, yes clutch is disengaging fully. When all is warm the gearbox is fine across the whole gate although it does not like to be rushed changing up or down. But I hear this is a characteristic of the 'box anyway.
So the VX claims of 'lifetime' oil in the gearbox are stretching it a bit then?
It's been years since I've done a gearbox oil change. Think that was on some FWD Renault and was one of the trickiest jobs I've ever had to do. But that's Renault's for you...

Its very easy on a manual, the only thing I would say is make sure the filler plug can be undone before undoing the drain plug ;)

Ah, a drain plug - that does sound promising ;) The Renault I refer to above didn't have one and you had to insert a pipe through the filler and extract the old oil.
