Which Omega
« on: 01 January 2009, 15:33:36 »

Hi Everyone!!!

New to this forum so I'll start by wishing you all A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

I'm currently looking to buy my first Omega (I currently drive an MG TF) but not sure which version to go for mainly engine size. ie is it better to go for 2.0 or a 2.5 auto or manual.

Any suggestions????

Well I would always go for a V6, much harder to work on, but much more poke.
If you can find an Elite then that would be the one I would go for, even though I have a CDX, I wish I had bought another Elite, I always buy auto's, but that's just my choice

My preferred Omega is 3.0/3.2 Auto, because the Omega is a big heavy car esp. compared to say a MG. If you get a 2.0 version I think you would be disappointed in how it drives. All the 1.8 sports cars that I've driven near never struggle to keep up with my 3.0 Auto.

The V6 is a very different car to the 4 pots. Most on hear are V6 owners. I love the smoothness of the V6 and the comfort of the Auto. But you pay for it in fuel consumption. Personally if I was buying now I would go for a late 3.2 Elite Auto. They are all cheap as chips now so you might as well have the best.

Look for a 3.0/3.2, the difference in performance is noticable over the 2.5

And because the bigger engines work less hard, there's not much in it between a 2.5 to a 3.2 on fuel consumption either.

I think it depends on how much cash for motoring you have and how many miles you do and motorway/town mix.
Now that the fuel has come down in price I am back using the 3.2 V6 elite -I have already done 500 miles this week and will be leaving in one hour to do another 650 between now and Sunday night. The 3.2 is a dream to drive with all the bits on - but if something goes wrong you are looking at big money. You do not feel too tired of driving after long journeys - this a mix of comfort and the performance of the car crusing along a motorway.
I have saved a lot by using this forum on items such as the colour screen (£1500 from VX versus £250 from German ebay), handbrake shoe issues and exhausts etc together with sound advice.
The new Signum diesel is now back on local duties - it is fun to drive but not as comfortable all round as Omega

If you are a diy person then go for the 2.6/3.2 elite if you can. If not - think very carefully about buying an older 3.2 with big mileage.

I bought my 2.2 auto a couple of months ago, the only real regret is not getting one sooner, but I must agree with the general feeling here, a V6 would be the best option, as the 2.2 does seem to lack a bit of power, I'll hopefully change mine later this year
