MOT failed help to fix
« on: 21 January 2009, 17:55:12 »

Hi, Just failed my MOT (Omega 2.2 petrol).
Failures:
1.centre o/s & n/s exhaust has a major leak of exhaust gases.
2.o/s & n's front lower (rear) suspension arm rubber bush deteriorated resulting in excessive movement.
3.(filter/pipe area) fuel system component leaking.

Just lost my job so will try to DIY so any tips welcome and where to get the parts at a good price.

Cheers

exhaust - if you can't bodge for now will be replacement.  If you have TC, you will find genuine ones are same price as crap pattern ones.

wishbone bushes - replace wishbones

fuel filler - drop the tank and investigate.

Fuel leak.....two possibles

1) Check the fuel filter, if its very old it could be corroded.
2) Fuel tank pump cover

For the latter, pull back the boot carpet and you will see a round disc with 4 screws in it. Remove the screws and remove the disc. Now you can see the pump cover, check for corrosion and make sure there are no leaks

For the bushes, fit new wishbones. Available for about 40-50 quid a pair.

Exhaust, bodge or replace is the only option.

A cheap pattern item is here:

Thanks for the advice I'll have a look tomorrow at the exhaust and fuel filter and cover.

I take it that the bushes can't be removed hence the replacement wishbones?

I've been quoted £5.93 + vat each for the bushes which seems reasonable if I can fit them.

You can't fit them yourself - you need a 10T press to get the old ones out and new ones in.   I paid a local garage a tenner to do one. (+ the bush).
