2-5 diesel

hi got a 2.5 diesel and on the front of the engine block its got a device that looks like a advance and retard device off a old mini.what does this do?and it looks like it there is a pipe missing of it where should it go?thanks

Can you be more specific?
Is it at the forward end of the inlet manifold?

il have another look tomorrow as the cars covered in snow but its at the front of the engine /top of the block on the near side

EGR valve?  Thinking of something that looks like a vac capsule (and i don't have a tractor...yet)

i think u might be right as that is what a advance and retard does on a dizzy and it looks like there should be a pipe on it but i cant see where it is

Hmmm, I'm sure that one of the small-bore pipes connects the EGR valve to the EGR solenoid valve, (which is mounted by the PAS reservoir). The other pipe, (which is missing in your case), simply vents to the atmosphere, at least I think so, IIRC.

I'll try and confirm in the morning ........

Yep, there are indeed two small-bore pipes from the EGR valve.

The outer one, (nearest the battery), connects to the EGR solenoid valve, (by the PAS reservoir).
The inner one goes to atmosphere.
Mine's been lengthened, re-routed and clipped behind the rad to allow any discharge to drip out of harms way below the car.
