miss fire
« on: 06 February 2009, 16:54:06 »

missfire on m reg 2.5 petrol estate.

at around 1k revs it runs like a bag of poo and the tickover is lumpy, its got gradually worse over the last few days and splutters when you put the boot down.

is it likely to be the breathers that need a good cleaning out or plugs and leads or fuel line.

it runs fine or at least you dont notice it at speed but under load you do feel it.

you can hear it misfiring from the exhaust but its not backfiring, and it does folloe the same rythem. sounds to me like one cylider thats not firing so i'm thinking plug or lead on that cyl. i will be reading codes at w/end.

read codes last week and got the battery voltage low, but the voltage was 13.9 so no probs there and another code but cant remember what. it wasnt to do with misfires or anything. it was something minor and didnt reappear afterwards. other than the misfire/lumpy tickover it runs fine and would be as still as sleeping baby when this little niggle is sorted!

there is gunk on oil cap but uses no water at all and i'm sure it isnt a gasket problem.

whats best way to get rid of all the gunk in the filler cap and i presume the rocker covers without stripping the engine?

dont want to do a oil change etc and leave gunk in there to pollute new oil and filter!

cheers guys!

mayo on cap is normal, but a long run will burn it off, or just wipe with a rag.

miss fires, check for oil in plug wells/cooked or split plug lead caps/ or visibly buggered dis pac, have a search mate, both subjects been well covered on here. ;)

sorry for previous short reply, was using a mac, bloody gay horrible thing.
Can happen at any revs, no rule to it, i had a 4 pot a couple of months ago, it was fine poodling around and just cut out at 4k when you put your foot down. I would change the plugs as well, how old are they?
40k service life.
Cheapest and best quality from vx parts dept.
Dis pac is best had from breakers on here.
Plug leads range from 35 from euro car parts and barely do the job, but they are ok, to 90 a side for genuine vx. Hth

changed plugz today, no difference, ordered the leads. didnt have time to strip the plenum down so thats a job for next week!

is there a way of checking the coil pack? i dont want to rebuild the engine to then have to strip it to get to the coil pack?

i'm pretty sure its the leads as they are a bit naff!

there were no faults logged except no rpm signal but engine was off so thats normal!
