Not quite as sweet as it looked
« on: 11 February 2009, 13:19:50 »

Hi,

Bought an 3.0L Elite last week on an ebay purchace. Finally got in home yesterday and managed to get it on a ramp this morning to have a proper look at it.

Lets start with the bad...

Front disks worn
Front tyres badly worn on inner lip
Tracking is off
Rear tyres are mismatched and cheapos anyway
Both rear springs are broken
Rear pads worn
Sunroof doesn't work - Fuse ok
Windows seem very slow to operate
Paint on sunfoof outer peeling
Drivers heated seat doesn't work, not tested others
Glovebox latch broken
Interior door handle loose
Several dash/console lights
Heater worked yesterday, didn't today
Possible oil leek...

Looks a lot but I would imagine most of that stuff would be fairly easy to repair. The car is a 99 and lully loaded inc sat nav. I think the only things it is missing is the thigh support seats and the phone handset. Does have a Traffic master button but made some funny noises upon pressing so I left well alone!

Engine sounds good, no problems apart from the wallowy handling. Are new/uprated/lowered springs going to improve handling?? Best way to go?

Asked mech to check gearbox oil but he reckoned it would need an electronic diag. Do have the serice book so will see if I can find out when it last had attention.

104 cambelt kit
128 on it now.

Any advice welcome!!

OK here goes

Brakes - disc and pad set on trade club or AutoVaux

Springs, either after market - eg Eibach or Irmsher set, or keep it standard with replacement rears - does self levelling work - I have Eibach on mine and the handling is a lot better.

Tracking & front tyres ect.

Check the steering idler, and the wishbone bushes, idler around £30 wishbones about £45 a pair from buypartsbuy.

Springs & Steering ect

When you have fixed the springs and checked the steering head to Wheels in Motion at Chesham - very good at setting up Omegas.

Glovebox - bits are cheap from the dealer, need to remove box to fit it though - do not force it.

Interior trim - may need to contact a breakerm there are a few on here

All fairly common problems so you should find the info you need on here.

.. and he's talking rubbish about needing eklectronic diag to check the gearbox oil. ::)

If the history is unknown I would change the gearbox fluid (assuming it's an auto?).

Cambelt change is 40k / 4 years so check when it was done as well. For peace of mind it might be worth doing it anyway. It is vital that the whole kit was changed as the tensioners fail.

Welcome and Enjoy  :y

Thanks all.

I think it'll be into March before I can start spending again, the unexpected purchace and insurance cost has left me a bit tight.

The info is great, you do get a lot of opinions on forums but at least you get the opportunity to investigate each one! Can anyone advise how to check the Gearbox oil then? Is there some sort of dipstick or level check somewhere??

Cambelt was done Dec 06 so just over two years ago. The reciept states Cambelt 'Kit' so i would have thought the tensioners were changed too. i may give them a ring and see if I can get any more info.

The first planned job is getting the rear springs and pads done.
i can't remember the brand but i was looking about £11 for pads and £23 per spring  +VAT and about 2 hrs labour.

Had a brief look at the Eibach - I assume the prices are for a set of 4??
.
Front end - Not left with much cash. Was looking at kumo tyres at 75 a pop and tracking. Any other tyres worth considering?

Sunroof...reset most likely all thats needed...

Theres a guide on here somewhere but basically with ignition on...put in close position push up and hold knob till it resets...then put in fully open position and do the same...and the same in fully tilted position...should now work normally in all settings  :y

Thats brilliant MutantCav. I'll def give that a try.

It opened about an inch or so then locked and managed to get it shut and the tilt to open, then locked again.
Got home and had to manually wind it shut.

Will have a look for the reset guide.

tyres, go to camskill (google for it) and get some Falken ZE912s , just had mine delivered £62 inc vat and delivery. Bung your local tyre place a tenner a corner to fit them.

If money is really tight you should also be able to get some reasonable cheapos from the same place for less £££'s

WOW! Thanks everyone, some great knowledge on here.

Sunroof is now working....In the snow ;D

Console lights dont look too difficult, I may give that job a try myself.

Is there a fix for the heated seats or is it a case of once its gone, its gone?

Cheers for the tyre info too. :y
